As Formula Ford celebrates its 40th birthday this weekend at Road America, Honda is stepping up to the plate with a proposal for a new engine. The entry-level, open-wheel class has been using a "Kent" 1.6-liter since its inception and with the aging four-cylinders out of production, it may finally be time to move on.

PRESS RELEASE

Honda Performance Development, Inc. Proposes Entry Into FF Prototype Debuts at FF 40th Anniversary Celebration

As one of the initial offerings in its new grassroots motorsports initiative, Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD), the authorized Honda and Acura auto racing company in North America, is proposing entry into an SCCA Club Racing program with an eye toward lowering operating costs, while strengthening FF's position as the first step in American open-wheel racing.

HPD's concept, submitted to the Sports Car Club of America for membership input and approval, incorporates a 1.5-liter, Honda Fit L15A7 engine into an existing FF chassis. During initial testing, the Honda engine provided performance equal to the long out-of-production "Kent" engine, but featuring a modern fuel-injected design with superior service life, improved availability and lower operating costs.

"FF has a tremendous history, here in North America and around the world. Through the '70s and '80s, it was THE place for open-wheel racers to 'cut their racing teeth'," said Erik Berkman, President of Honda Performance Development. "So many champion drivers, such as our own Jimmy Vasser, Gil de Ferran and Bryan Herta, got their start in FF. Our goal is not to force competitors to make a change, but to make FF more affordable and more competitive."

A prototype, utilizing a Swift DB-1 chassis and HPD-developed bolt-on conversion kit, will make its public debut this weekend with demonstration laps during Road America's FF 40th Anniversary Celebration. The Swift-Honda will be on display in Road America's North Paddock throughout the weekend, and officials from HPD and its parent, American Honda Motor Company, Inc., will be on hand to meet with SCCA members and answer questions. HPD and American Honda are actively soliciting the reactions and thoughts of both current and potential FF competitors.

The Honda FF engine has been developed by Honda Performance Development in cooperation with Sandy Shamlian of Quicksilver RacEngines. The engine is being developed to equal the performance of the Kent powerplant through utilization of an HPD-developed intake restrictor plate and appropriately mapped Engine Control Unit (ECU). If testing reveals the need for additional performance adjustments, changes can be made to the restrictor plate and/or the ECU maps to achieve this goal.

"Many of us, myself included, have been involved in FF racing," said Marc Sours, HPD Production Division Manager and Large Project Leader for HPD's grassroots projects. "We've all seen FF engine costs rise and replacement parts become increasingly difficult to locate.

"The result has been a decline in FF participation. We believe that introducing the modern, less-expensive Honda Fit engine can restore interest in and raise the profile of FF to a point where it once again becomes the place for young drivers to begin their careers, and where existing SCCA club racers will find economical, close competition."

Original equipment in the 2009 Honda Fit, the L15A7 is a fuel-injected, 1.5-liter, overhead cam engine. It is at the beginning of its current production generation, with a minimum of 10 years' parts support required by law at the conclusion of production.

HPD will supply all necessary parts from intake through exhaust, including the chassis conversion kit. The result will be a modern and reliable engine requiring minimal maintenance and tuning.

Specifically, HPD expects FF competitors to reduce their engine operating costs. Engine rebuilds would be reduced from two per year to one every other year; top-end refreshing would be needed just once a year rather than multiple times per season; both crankshaft and valve- spring life would be extended dramatically; and most ignition and all carburetor maintenance would be eliminated.

The complete Honda FF kit is expected to sell for under $12,000. The package would include a base L15A7 engine, FF race kit (including intake, exhaust, dry sump, restrictor plate and ECU), and a bolt-in chassis kit, to permit installation of the engine without welding or other major modifications. Individual component parts would also be available for purchase separately.

Beginning with its initial entry into Formula One in 1964, Honda has a lengthy record of involvement in open-wheel racing around the world. In addition to its well-known accomplishments in IndyCar, CART and Formula One competition, Honda Motor also has an extensive history as an engine supplier in lower open-wheel formulae, including Formula 3, Formula Master, Formula Nippon and Formula Dream.

"Today marks the beginning of a new era of Honda Performance Development's participation in, and support for, amateur racers; the first step in what we see as a diverse grassroots racing program," said Berkman. "All of us at HPD look forward to participating in a variety of racing series and categories and helping the sport we all enjoy grow in prominence and popularity."

Honda Performance Development (HPD) is Honda's racing company within North America. Founded in 1993, and located in Santa Clarita, Calif., HPD is the technical operations center for Honda and Acura's high-performance racing cars and engines. In addition to its new grassroots motorsports business, HPD is the single engine supplier to the IndyCar Series and competes in prototype sports-car racing under the Acura banner in the American Le Mans Series.

Quicksilver RacEngines (QSRE) is a private company in Frederick, MD owned and operated by Sandy Shamlian since 1973. QSRE engines have been a staple in open-wheel and sports-car racing, logging countless professional and amateur race wins and championships in the USA, England, Venezuela, Australia & Canada in classes such as Zetec F2000, Formula Continental, Sports 2000, Formula Atlantic, and FF1600.

Felipe Massa at 2009 Hungarian grand prix, practice

Felipe Massa is in a "life-threatening" condition on Saturday night after undergoing surgery on his fractured skull.

Brawn team boss Ross Brawn confirmed that the piece of Rubens Barrichello's car that fell off and struck Massa on the helmet at the Hungaroring during qualifying weighed 800 grams and is made of steel.

A recent agreement with Jones & Sons Chassis will see the All-Electric Scalable Powertrain (AESP) installed into a serial hybrid recreational vehicle platform with a 150-mile all-electric range. The REERV (range-extended electric recreational vehicle) will supposedly be able to achieve a total range of 500 miles and be capable of refilling its battery overnight on the 220V, 50 amp service typically found at campgrounds.

Shelby SuperCars, creators of the Utimate Aero (above), infamously announced last Summer that it would begin building the world's fastest electric car, the Ultimate Aero EV. The company said the EV supercar would be unleashed sometime this summer at an American racetrack in a show of fast laps and fast charging. While that's yet to happen, SSC's Green division has announced plans to put the heart of its electric powertrain inside a hybrid motor-home.

Although no time frame was given for the project, an earlier release from SSC Green states, ambitiously, that they hope to supply over a quarter of the drivetrains needed to reach Obama's 2015 million plug-in car goal. The 260,000 AESP's would be be built at its manufacturing plant if the $30 million Department of Energy's Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative grant to fund their expansion plan comes through.

PRESS RELEASE:

SSC GREEN AND JONES & SON CHASSIS TO PRODUCE HYBRID MOTORHOMES

Jones & Son Chassis, Inc., North America's premier custom motorhome chassis designer has entered into an exclusive agreement with SSC Green Inc. of West Richland, Washington to integrate SSC Green's All Electric Scalable Powertrain (AESP) to produce a hybrid motorhome chassis platform.

After a year of meeting with several companies and researching various entities in the EV drivetrain industry, "SSC Green's AESP proved to be the only solution to meet the demanding specifications and capabilities of our motorhome chassis."

Jones & Sons Chassis design specification requires a 500-mile range motorhome that must achieve 150 miles on battery pack, and then switch over to "hybrid mode" for an additional 350 miles. During hybrid mode the onboard generator will charge the battery pack. SSC Green's controller will easily charge the battery pack overnight with 50amp/220 volt standard camp ground electrical service. Jones believes SSC Green is the solution for supplying cost effective, reliable hybrid powertrain technology for the motorhome market.

SSC Green is a subsidiary of Shelby SuperCars the producer of the Ultimate Aero, the "World's Fastest Production Car". With a track-record for excellence and innovation of ground breaking technology SSC Green's AESP presents a real alternative to motorhomes powered exclusively by petroleum based fuel.

SSC GREEN, INC. SUBMITS GRANT TO EXPAND PRODUCTION LINE

SSC Green, Inc. Submits Grant to Expand Production Line, Produce Enough Electric Powertrains to Satisfy 26% of President Obama's Goal to have One Million EV's on the Road by 2015.

SSC Green today announced it has submitted plans for approximately $30 million to the Department of Energy's Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative (FOA DE-FOA-0000026) to fund its current manufacturing facilities expansion plan. SSC Green and its partners would contribute half the funds with the Department of Energy contributing the remaining funds. The expansion would produce enough All-Electric Scalable Powertrains (AESP) to power 260,000 vehicles, 26% of President Obama's goal to have one million EV's on the road by 2015.

SSC Green's AESP is the final product of a revolutionary concept; a cost effective, mass-producible powertrain compact and power dense enough to fit a wide variety of applications. Each electric motor is power dense, weighing only 175 lbs, less than 1 cubic foot in volume with output of up to 500 hp, and scalable in single motor (100 hp – 500 hp) and twin motor (501 hp – 1000 hp) configurations. The physical size of the motor and controller remain the same for every application allowing for cost effective mass-production and ease of implementation. Computer programming alone, instead of costly re-tooling, scales the power output of the electric motors.

"A unique mindset and approach to innovating groundbreaking technology is a fundamental necessity in order to be a viable entity in the supercar market. Being the producer of the world's benchmark supercar it was logical to broaden SSC's scope to developing cutting edge Green technologies," said Jerod Shelby, President/CEO of SSC Green. "The philosophical and problem solving synergies between the Green and supercar markets are strikingly identical and have led us to the next breakthrough in automotive technology."

Major outcomes of the expansion to mass produce SSC Green's All-Electric Scalable Powertrain (AESP) include the creation of domestic jobs (70 immediate construction, 203 direct, and 12,000 indirect) and rapidly bringing to market a revolutionary technology to combat the downfalls of petroleum-based fuels (cost, foreign dependency, environmental impact). Additionally, SSC Green is sourcing raw materials and sub components for its exclusively US based AESP production from American suppliers, further stimulating all relevant industries. SSC Green's approach allows mass production of the AESP to begin 18 months from the project start date. By 2015, SSC Green will produce enough AESPs to power 260,000 vehicles, 26% of President Obama's goal to have one million EV's on the road by 2015. Additionally, SSC Green has received an overwhelming amount of broad bipartisan senate and congressional support from DC.

Another visionary concept is SSC's approach to utilizing battery technology. Battery technology is constantly changing, and to date manufacturers design their EVs around a specific battery technology. In this accelerated field, sooner than later, battery technology changes and EVs dependent on their technology along with their powertrains become dated. Engineered and designed to incorporate batteries as the technology evolves allows the AESP's design to remain effective and cutting edge over a long period.

SSC's electric powertrain does not require a new platform; it allows for simple implementation into current vehicles and applications. The logical and adaptable design allows mass manufacturers to cost effectively implement the AESP into multiple assembly lines and produce efficient electric vehicles immediately, without the long-term development of new models.

Overwhelming domestic and international response has recognized SSC Green's AESP as a revolutionary innovation. Inquiries for AESP purchase range from major US manufactures of various vehicles (RVs to SUVs). Equally important, SSC already has contracts to export the AESP to Japanese auto manufacturers, Chinese auto manufacturers, national and international government subsidized mass transit, and Hong Kong manufacturing plants, helping to draw foreign money back into the US.

It's been two-and-a-half years since the Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris SSUV debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, and although the recent spate of spy shots indicate work is well underway, Spyker won't make its self-imposed release date this year.

Spyker D8 Peking to Paris - Mule

Coinciding with earlier reports, Spyker plans to utilize an American-sourced V8 to power the D8 SSUV, and if Autoblog.nl's sleuthing abilities are to be believed, it's none other than General Motor's supercharged 6.2-liter LSA – the mill that powers the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V.

Spyker D8 Peking to Paris - Mule

Instead, the high-speed luxo-'ute will likely appear at next year's Geneva expo and when it does, it will like drop its "D12" moniker for "D8" thanks to the supercharged V8 lying under its sculpted hood.

Spyker D8 Peking to Paris - Mule

You maybe wondering how do they know this? A member at Autoblog.nl spotted a Land Rover mule of the D8. It got a Dutch license plate and a Spyker logo on the back. Checking the information via the Dutch authorities gave more information on the engine used. The specifications of the engine correspond to the engine used in the CTS-V. Coincidence? We do not think so.

The addition of the V10-powered R8 5.2 FSI quattro adds further equity into the already sought-after R8 nameplate and the Audi brand.”

The R8 is one of four Audi models currently built with the revolutionary ASF® chassis, a technology that Audi has mastered in more than a decade of experience. ASF is customized by model, including its application with the A8 and TT Coupe and Roadster models. The framework of an ASF body consists of extruded aluminum sections and pressure castings. The aluminum chassis and sheet metal are just as strong as steel, but lighter to boost performance and efficiency. This frame carries the sheet aluminum elements, for example the roof panel, which are rigidly connected to it and help to withstand loads on the body. The elements of ASF are varied in shape and cross-section, depending on the tasks they have to perform. Like the bones of a human skeleton, they combine optimal function with low weight. The ASF application on the Audi R8 offers extremely high torsional rigidity, light weight and high strength for optimal performance characteristics.

All R8 models are produced in Neckarsulm, Baden Württemberg, Germany along with the aluminum A8 model. Audi is continuing to shape the future in lightweight design and elsewhere too. Inaugurated in 1994, the Aluminum and Lightweight Design Center in Neckarsulm, Germany employs more than 120 specialists to work on new joining techniques, body structures, materials and construction techniques. They also look into the use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength grades of steel. In the area of fiber composites, Audi also acts as an innovative pioneer and trend-setter by leveraging its significant racetrack experience and success to test advanced component concepts under extreme conditions prior to implementation on its road vehicles.

Audi expects to release 2010 pricing and model year changes for the remainder of its lineup within the next few weeks.

Alfa Romeo's successor to the 147 has been spied yet again. For the first time, we can now see the full use of LEDs at the back on the upcoming Alfa Romeo Milano.

SB-Medien / Alfa Romeo Milano rear LED tailamp design spy photo

The Alfa Romeo Milano is expected to come with several different petrol and diesel engine options, including a top-shelf turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder engine. That engine should produce around 200 horsepower, while smaller 1.4-liter units should produce from 120 to 160 hp. Sharing much of the same front styling as the MiTo, designers made the vehicle more unique with a rounder posterior.

For many, car-buying is an experience that rates somewhere between pouring a basket of scorpions into your underwear and a visit to the dentist from Marathon Man. Some dealerships feel like hives of villainy more wretched than even the Star Wars Cantina, though being held at gunpoint by Greedo is likely preferable to enduring the overall auto-buying process at one of those retailers. After all, as Han Solo demonstrated, one can actually "deal" with Greedo in a satisfactory manner.

PRESS RELEASE

Audi releases 2010 MY prices for A4, A5, Q5
  • Early release of prices required as vehicles arrive to meet strong demand
  • Audi A5 coupe adds efficient and powerful 2.0 TFSI powertrain with both manual and Tiptronic transmissions together with standard quattro AWD drivetrain
  • Audi Q5 adds interior luxury appointments and simplifies tire pressure monitoring system
  • Comprehensive A4, A5, and Q5 model year changes enhance product offerings
HERNDON, Va., Jul 17, 2009 - Audi today released pricing for the 2010 model-year Audi A4 sedan, Audi A5 coupe and Audi Q5 crossover vehicle, which are headed to authorized Audi dealerships to meet strong consumer demand.

Audi moved sales of the 2010 models ahead a few weeks following a successful sell-down of the previous model-year inventory. Sales of the 2009 Audi A5, for example, finished June 168% ahead of the sales pace set a year earlier. Demand for the all-new Audi Q5 has been exceptionally strong since its February introduction to consumers with sales hitting 5,701 so far this year.

Each of these models in the heart of the Audi lineup receives upgrades for the 2010 model year. A4 and A5 now feature LED tail lights in Premium Plus and Prestige lines, A5 gets the same fuel efficient 2.0 TFSI direct-injection engine offered in the A4, and Q5 Prestige offers an optional Luxury Package.

"Despite the economic headwinds that have affected all premium automotive brands this year, we see no signs of interest lagging in these three models," said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. "That's good news heading into the 2010 model year for our market share in the U.S., which has been hitting record levels. That's good news for our dealers, who are enjoying the enthusiasm the Audi brand is generating. We need to release these new models early because of our proactive management of unsold inventories and because Audi continues to bring new models to the freshest lineup in the luxury sector. Both trends will continue in the months ahead."

Audi expects to release 2010 pricing and model year changes for the remainder of its lineup within the next few weeks.

General Motors Co. plans tighter output limits for the new Buick LaCrosse sedan than previous models as the automaker attempts to end its habit of overproducing after leaving bankruptcy.

Traditionally, the goal has been to have a 60-day supply of a car on dealer lots. This level provides a good balance between minimal stock and having enough vehicles to allow customers to find the one they want and make a quick sale. During the launch drive of the 2010 Buick LaCrosse last week, Buick-GMC VP Susan Docherty explained that her plan is to have no more than 75 to 90 days of total supply of any model, and this particular statement has generated some confusion. Bloomberg reports this as 75 to 90 days of dealer inventory, an undesirably high figure.

Matching inventory to consumer demand helps an automaker avoid needing to liquidate stockpiles of unsold cars with cash rebates that reduce profit. Guidelines that the government’s auto task force set as it granted GM federal aid assume the company will be profitable when annual U.S. industry sales reach 10 million, which some analysts say may occur this year.

In fact, after Docherty first stated that number, Motor Trend's Todd Lassa immediately asked her for further clarification. Docherty then explained to a group of journalists, including this blogger, that the 75-to-90-day supply number refers to total supply, including cars on dealer lots plus cars in transit and cars at the factory awaiting shipment. Thus, the actual corresponding dealer inventory number is really 45 to 60 days. Industry publications such as Automotive News typically report only the smaller dealer inventory numbers, not the total supply figure Docherty referred to in her media presentation.

say not common at all. But this particular car, modified by Mansory, is less common than even most other custom Veyrons. In March, at the Geneva Motor Show, the modified Veyron was put on display for the first time and officials from Mansory let loose full details about the car, including its mammoth 1,109hp (827kW) power output. Today, we have a new mega-gallery of photos straight from the company that show off the car in every exquisite, carbon-weave detail.

Eschewing the popular matte-color trend of late, the Mansory Vincero is pure gloss from stem to stern. Largely blacked out, but with a sprinkling of chrome accents in the grille and a dark chrome treatment along the side of the car across the front fenders and door panels, the Vincero certainly lives up to its name. LED accents in the headlights and fully custom forged wheels finish off the exterior treatment with attention to detail.

Along with the huge power figure is an equally tall torque number: 967lb-ft (1,310Nm). That should be enough to erase a few tenths off the already-world-class mid-2 second 0-60mph (96km/h) time for the Veyron. The extra power comes by way of improved intake and exhaust systems plus attendant engine tuning.

An extra dose of naked carbon fiber across the front bonnet and rear engine cover, plus the rear fascia and diffuser gives the Vincero the look of the Sang Noir, though it is not the basis for this custom car. Only 15 of the Sang Noir special-editions were built, however, so it's enough that this car is styled to look somewhat alike.

Inside the car gets a typically Mansory two-tone black and white treatment, though the addition of a woven element makes for a unique touch. Ambient lighting and custom shift paddles on the steering wheel complete the package.

For those that would like to investigate the matter in person, or just happen to have several million unused dollars lying about, the car is on sale exclusively at Prestige Cars in the United Arab Emirates. Bring an extra $1 million in addition to the purchase price of your Veyron, though, because that's what the Vincero upgrades will cost you.
