Chicago Auto Show: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible

Ford has unveiled the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible at the Chicago Auto Show. Ford is also using Chicago to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Special Vehicles Team.

In 1992, Ford officially launched the SVT brand at the Chicago Auto Show with the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. The brand has now returned to the 2012 Chicago Auto Show with the new 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible. The drop-top version of the Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich. and will go on sale later this year.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible features the same 650 horsepower 5.8-liter supercharged V8 as the coupe but one thing will be limited, the 200 plus MPH top speed. Ford decided to stay safe and limit the drop tops speed to 155 MPH.

The 2013 Shelby comes with an optional performance package and is faster around a track than its outgoing model. The new car shaved nearly 31/2 seconds off its lap time at Sebring International Raceway compared to the 2011 and 2012 models, Ford says.

In addition to the carbon fiber driveshaft, upgraded clutch, transmission, camshafts and cross-drilled block and heads, SVT fitted its own specially developed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, along with six-piston Brembo calipers squeezing massive discs up front.

Like the Coupe, a Performance Package and a Track Package will also be available for the Convertible. The Performance Package includes Bilstein electronically-adjusted dampers while the Track Package features an external engine-oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler to prevent over-heating on the track.

CHICAGO, Feb. 8, 2012 – The official launch of SVT came during the 1992 Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. Now Ford returns to Chicago to celebrate its past and look to the future with the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible.

In honor of SVT’s anniversary, a commemorative lighted sill plate will be used in the 2013 Shelby GT500 to celebrate the many years of performance vehicles. The 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra offered a 235-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine, which demonstrates just how far the products have come in 20 years. The 2013 Shelby GT500 with its 650-horsepower V8 marks the latest offering from one of the oldest and most successful automotive performance groups in the world.

“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”

Keys to the improved lap times are the power boost from the new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 producing 650 horsepower, as well as the SVT-designed Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers available on the Performance Package and the all-new chassis tuning.

Accessed on the dash with a simple push of a button, normal mode gives customers a more comfortable ride over road irregularities. Sport mode is all about performance, delivering improved response time on the track and less body roll while cornering with reduced pitch under braking. The upgraded dampers allowed SVT engineers to tune the convertible more aggressively for the track, while still being able to maintain desirable on-road manners.

A new Brembo brake system also is a key enabler in boosting the performance of the convertible. The new brakes offer drivers enhanced stopping power to help keep their car under control, while new six-piston calipers in front along with larger front and rear rotors further improve braking performance. More aggressive brake pads also help the car achieve high deceleration and further robustness for more driver confidence.

Similar to the coupe, the convertible will be offered with a Performance Package that also can be upgraded to a Track Package, complete with an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler for further durability.

20 years of high-performance innovation

Each of the more than 210,000 SVT vehicles produced since 1993 has been designed and developed with the four SVT attributes in mind: Performance, Substance, Exclusivity and Value. These hallmarks still guide the brand’s vehicle development today.

“In the past 20 years, SVT has engineered world-class mid-engine supercars, front-wheel-drive performance cars, rear-wheel-drive muscle cars and high-performance on-road and off-road pickup trucks,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “There is no other performance house in the world that can match that diverse résumé.”

Since 1993 more than seven different SVT vehicles have been produced, including several versions of the Cobra and Shelby GT500, the F-150 Lightning performance pickup and F-150 SVT Raptor, the SVT Contour sports sedan, plus both three- and five-door versions of the SVT Focus. Special SVT Mustang Cobra R models were made in 1993, 1995 and 2000.

SVT has joined with Team RS in Europe to form the Performance Vehicles Group to devise a strategy for all future global performance Ford cars. The resulting Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car, giving drivers around the world the opportunity to share the exhilarating performance, excellent handling, addictive sound and sporty design Ford’s ST badge represents. The Ford Fiesta ST Concept also signals the next step in Ford’s global performance vehicle strategy and hints at how a future Fiesta ST model might look when it joins the Focus ST in the global small car portfolio.

The ultimate Ford Mustang – Shelby GT500 – raises the bar high on performance by delivering 650 horsepower and a track-tested top speed of more than 200 mph. The 5.8-liter supercharged V8 aluminum-block engine produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world.

Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

And nearly every gear on the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been revised to manage the torque and use more of the power in a way that makes it more driver-friendly.

Geneva Preview: 2013 Fiat 500L

Fiat has unveiled the 2013 Fiat 500L, which will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The 2013 Fiat 500L offers “MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a B segment car, the new Fiat model defies the conventional distinctions between the various segments, combining the typical characteristics of different categories in order to create a distinctive alternative to the traditional B and C segments,” Fiat said in a statement.”

The 500L measures in at 163-inches long, 70-inches wide and 65-inches high. By comparison, the standard 500 model, the 500L is roughly two feet longer.

It would seem likely that the American market 500L will only get the 1.4-liter MultiAir inline-four-cylinder engine from the 500, which produces 101 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque in that car.

Inside, there’s seating for five though a seven-seat version is expected to be launched for European markets at a later date.

Fiat presents the first official images of the 500L, the new model which will have its world preview at the International Geneva Motor Show on 6 March this year.

500L - the L stands for 'Large' - is the new addition to the 500 range, which, following the Abarth and Cabrio versions, furthers the brand's strategy, with the aim of extending its offer by introducing models in a position to satisfy different types of customers.

With the 'L', the 500 expands and grows together with customers, to accommodate new experiences and needs once more.

With MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a B segment car, the new Fiat model defies the conventional distinctions between the various segments, combining the typical characteristics of different categories in order to create a distinctive alternative to the traditional B and C segments.

With the 500L, the Fiat brand demonstrates its creative spirit once more: a marriage of functionality and emotion, it features a 5-seater single-volume structure which is 414 cm long, 178 cm wide and 166 cm high. It is a further development of the concept of 'cab forward' introduced by Fiat with the 600 Multipla, a precursor to the concept of the compact people carrier.

Produced at the Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, 500L is a 'first car' for those who won't settle for anything less than Italian style, the versatility that comes from a functional design and engine technology that sets the bar in terms of efficiency.

The Fiat 500L will be introduced to Europe in the last quarter of 2012, with an engine range which will initially comprise two petrol engines (TwinAir and 1.4-litre) and a turbodiesel engine (1.3 MultiJet II) and the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology from Fiat Group Automobiles.

Toyota has unveiling the iQ concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon.The Toyota have taken the opportunity to showcase what can be achieved with their production models, the iQ, Yaris, and GT 86 (on sale in the UK from June).

The GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by MN) iQ Supercharger prototype with 1.33-liter engine was first presented at last year's Tokyo Auto Salon with 119 hp (89 kW / 121 PS) and 158 Nm (117 lb-ft).
Now after a few tweaks, the revised iQ Supercharger prototype produces 128 hp (95 kW / 130 PS) and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft). Not exactly a huge gain but in the tiny city car that weighs only 990 kg (2183 lbs), it could be noticeable.

'GRMN', 'G's' Concepts Debut at Tokyo Auto Salon 2012

'GRMN iQ Supercharger' to be Launched Summer 2012

Toyota City, Japan, January 13, 2012-Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is displaying a total of 15 vehicles, including five concept vehicles from "GAZOO Racing tuned by MN" (GRMN) and "G Sports"1 (G's), plus production vehicles, at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 with NAPAC2. The Tokyo Auto Salon, the world's largest customized car exhibition, is being held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City from today through January 153.

TMC views the Tokyo Auto Salon as a place where peoples' dreams about automobiles convene, and as such has actively exhibited there. Building on last year's show, TMC hopes to spark an even wider range of people's interest in the joy of owning, driving and discussing automobiles developed through GAZOO Racing4 activities.

The main concept vehicle on display is the "GRMN iQ Supercharger" prototype, a second-generation GRMN supercharged ultra compact scheduled for a limited 100-unit launch5 this summer. Based on the "iQ 130G MT "6, the GRMN iQ Supercharger features enhanced driving performance and seeks a feeling of integration between vehicle and driver. Also on display from the GRMN series are the "GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II" and the "GRMN Vitz Turbo Concept", as well as the G's series' "Mark X G Sports Concept II" and "Vellfire G Sports Concept" sports-conversion models.

Part of TMC's exhibition space is an area devoted to custom versions of the compact, rear-wheel-drive sports car "86" ("hachi-roku"), a vehicle extremely popular at the Tokyo Motor Show 2011. On display are two custom models and also the "GAZOO Racing Toyota FT-86" that competed in the 2011 Nürburgring endurance race. (TMC plans to compete again this year with an 86 from GAZOO Racing.) The display will also feature aerodynamic parts, wheels and other accessories to give consumers a clear idea of the 86's expansive customization possibilities.

During the exhibition, TMC is holding virtual events on GAZOO Metapolis7, a Japanese-language website featuring a virtual city (http://metapolis.toyota.co.jp). Also, the GAZOO website (in Japanese) has a special, exhibition-focused section (http://gazoo.com/racing/event/autosalon2012). Videos from the venue will be posted on Ustream and information will be available on web-based social-media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to enhance the dialogue between car enthusiasts both inside and outside the exhibition.

To further expand its GAZOO activities, TMC established a full-time GAZOO department this January to create more opportunities for people to easily experience the joy of automobiles. 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Facelift

Toyota has released photos and details for 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser facelift, which was introduced on the Japanese Domestic Market in December, is set to arrive in the US later this year.

The exterior of the 2013 Land Cruiser keeps its “Advanced and Rugged” theme with larger front and rear fenders as well as an updated front grille, headlights and taillights.

The interior is updated to include leather upholstery, a new wood trim, a heated steering wheel and chrome outlines for the air vents.

2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is powered by a 5.7-liter engine great V8 with 381 hp DOHC power at 5600 rpm and of torque 544 NM at 3600 rpm. Ninety percent of peak torque is only achieved at 2200 rpm.

Pricing for the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser was not announced, but that could change in case this facelifted version decides to show its face at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next week.

The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser recently celebrated its 60th anniversary since its original launch in Japan and has remained constant in Toyota's U.S. model lineup for more than 50 years.

Land Cruiser has evolved over time from a basic four-wheel-drive utility vehicle in its early years to an upscale eight-passenger sport utility vehicle (SUV) sold in 188 countries. Yet, this iconic vehicle has retained a loyal following as it remains true to its off-road heritage with uncompromising go-anywhere capability.

For the 2013 model year, Land Cruiser receives exterior and interior styling enhancements. Additionally, Land Cruiser will now come with all features as standard equipment, including new driving performance features, and an array of significant safety and convenience features. Among the many popular features that were formerly available as options, but are now standard, are rear-seat DVD entertainment system, color-keyed rear spoiler, rain-sensing windshield wipers, center-console cooler box, headlamp cleaners, leather-trimmed steering wheel, multi-information display, voice and Bluetooth® hands-free controls, leather-trimmed shift lever and heated second row seats. Toyota's Premium Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Navigation with Entune multi-media system and JBL® audio is also standard.

Exterior Design
The 2013 Land Cruiser receives refreshed exterior styling that includes an updated front grille and headlamps with HID low-beams. Additional new features include LED Daytime Running Lights, chrome side molding, redesigned outer side mirrors and tail lamps. The design continues to convey an "Advanced and Rugged" theme with enlarged front and rear fenders. The new grille and headlamps maintain Land Cruiser's steady and confident appearance, while the hood flows gracefully into the grille and beltlines.

Character lines in the front, the area around the rear door handles, and the back door panels suggest strength. Foam-filled A-pillars and a "bifacial" molding between the windshield and the body both help reduce wind noise.

Underbody panels behind the front bumper and extending under the engine, and behind the rear wheels, are designed to protect the engine and transmission and to help the vehicle traverse rocky terrain smoothly. These underbody panels also smooth the airflow under the vehicle to help minimize drag and turbulence.

Land Cruiser is available in seven exterior colors, including Pearl White, which is new to the palette. Additional colors include Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Salsa Red Pearl, Sonora Gold Pearl, Amazon Green Metallic and Black.

Interior Design
Complementing the freshened exterior, Land Cruiser receives an updated interior available in either Sandstone or Black. Additional refinements include perforated leather trim with ventilated front seats, a higher gloss wood grain finish, brighter silver instrument panel ornamentation, chrome-plated air registers and updated meter-cluster lighting. New interior convenience features include a Multi-terrain Monitor with front, side or rear selectable views; a new Multi-information Display; an Eco Driving Indicator light and zone display; a heated steering wheel; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control; an additional power outlet (DC 12V) at the rear of the center console; and a rear cargo deck power outlet that has been changed to AC 120V from AC 115V.

Land Cruiser seats up to eight, with three-across seating in the second and third rows. The instrument panel features a set of bright Optitron gauges with white illumination. Beneath these gauges, a multi-informational display shows gear selection, odometer, tripmeter, fuel consumption, individual tire pressures and cruising range. The vehicle's center console features a gate-type shifter with sequential-shift-mode operation, the parking brake, center-console cooler box, USB port and cup holders.

The passenger-side second-row seat features a one-touch tumble mechanism for easier third-row ingress and egress. The second-row seats slide forward and aft 4.1 inches for more passenger comfort and cargo storage versatility. The second row also provides the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child seat attachment system.

Performance
The Land Cruiser's 5.7-liter V8 DOHC engine produces 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 401 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. Ninety percent of peak torque is available at just 2,200 rpm, helping make it an outstanding tow vehicle. The Land Cruiser uses regular-grade (87 AKI) gasoline and is ULEV-II certified.

The V8's advanced dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system controls valve timing and overlap on both the intake and exhaust valves, which helps to optimize power, fuel efficiency and emissions. The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) switches the length of the intake tract in two stages, based on RPM and throttle angle, to improve torque across the engine speed range. Stainless steel exhaust manifolds flow into a full stainless steel exhaust system. A water-cooled oil cooler helps control oil temperature while towing.

The Land Cruiser's six-speed automatic transmission is designed to handle high torque while performing with luxurious smoothness. Fourth gear is direct drive, and both fifth and sixth gears are overdrive ratios. The transmission's control unit estimates road conditions to select the appropriate gear ratio for the vehicle's speed and driving conditions. A sequential shift mode allows the driver to select gears manually.

Capability, Handling and Ride
The Land Cruiser's body-on-frame construction provides rugged durability in extreme driving conditions, plus impressive towing capability and ride isolation characteristics. The front of the frame features a three-stage crush structure, so frame damage to other areas of the vehicle is minimized in the case of frontal impact.

The Land Cruiser's high-mount double-wishbone front-suspension system uses gas-pressure shock absorbers, a hollow stabilizer bar, and coil springs. This system provides a high level of off-road driving capability and suspension control while maintaining outstanding on-road driving comfort. Approach and departure angles are 30 degrees and 20 degrees, respectively. At the rear, the reliable and proven four-link, coil-spring with lateral-rod format provides a long suspension stroke and also features gas-pressure shock absorbers and a hollow stabilizer bar.

The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) adjusts the lean resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars. KDSS may reduce maximum body-sway angle by as much as 50 percent to help enhance both on-road handling response and off-highway capability. By using hydraulic cylinders acting on each stabilizer bar and linked by a pressure-sensing valve, KDSS reduces the degree of sway stiffness provided by the stabilizer bars in response to changing road conditions and driver inputs.

In off-road driving situations, KDSS allows the wheels on each axle to move with a larger degree of side-to-side independence, helping to minimize any tendency for wheel lift. During cornering, when both front and rear cylinders are compressed, no fluid is flowing in the system, and the stabilizer bars work conventionally to help reduce body lean. When an uneven surface is encountered, one compressed cylinder causes fluid to flow between the front and rear cylinders, allowing the stabilizer bars to move freely. This action increases wheel articulation and travel, and it also helps to equalize wheel loading. By allowing the stabilizer bars to disengage in certain situations, the nominal stiffness of the bars can be notably increased, thereby reducing body lean and improving handling without negatively affecting ride comfort or off-road performance.

New on Land Cruiser is a Multi-terrain Select system that dials in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-than-normal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle's favor. On bumpy moguls, or solid rock, wheel slip is minimized and the system acts more like a limited slip differential. The Mogul setting is for any extremely uneven terrain, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges, uphill or down.

Land Cruiser rides on P285/60 R18 mud-and-snow steel-belted radial tires mounted on new 18 x 8.0-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a high-gloss finish (including a full-size spare). The brake system employs 13.4-inch ventilated discs with four-piston calipers up front and 13.6-inch ventilated discs at the rear. Variable gear ratio power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering requires just 3.1 turns lock-to-lock. Gear ratio is set larger around the steering center and smaller around the end position.

The lightweight, compact transfer case provides full-time four-wheel drive with a low-range 2.618:1 ratio for traversing challenging driving surfaces, such as steep inclines. The system uses a TORSEN® limited-slip locking center differential to distribute power 40:60 front-to-rear, directing more power to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur. Traction control (TRAC) employs both brake and throttle intervention to help control wheel spin. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), with a cut-off switch, helps maintain directional control during cornering.

A new five-speed CRAWL Control with an Off-Road Turn Assist feature helps make traversing difficult terrain easier. With the transfer case shifted into low range, CRAWL Control regulates engine speed and output (along with braking force), to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of five low-speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus on steering over extremely rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedals. The Off-Road Turn Assist feature pulses the rear corner brakes to help the vehicle make sharper turns when maneuvering through tight quarters on rugged terrain. CRAWL Control with Off-Road Turn Assist includes Downhill Assist Control (DAC), which is designed to augment the low-speed descending ability of low-range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with practically no driver intervention. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

For towing convenience, the Land Cruiser has a towing connector and sub-wiring harness to connect a commercial trailer-brake controller. New for Land Cruiser is a Trailer Sway Control that uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to help counteract handling forces applied to the truck in an effort to minimize the impact of trailer sway.

Safety
The Land Cruiser utilizes welded high-strength sheet steel, especially in the A-, B-, C- and D-pillars, and in the rocker area to increase rigidity and reduce weight. The B-pillars are designed to help absorb side impacts and help dissipate into the rest of the body structure.

For driver and passenger peace-of-mind every Land Cruiser is equipped with the Safety ConnectTM telematics system.

Available by subscription (first year of service is included in the new vehicle purchase price), the Safety Connect telematics system offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and enhanced Roadside Assistance, which adds GPS data to the already-included warranty-based Toyota roadside service.

In case of either airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision; Automatic Collision Notification is designed to automatically call the response center. If the response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance.

Pushing the "SOS" button can summon help in an emergency and for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a Land Cruiser equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, the system can help local authorities locate it.

Like all Toyotas, the Land Cruiser comes standard with the STAR Safety SystemTM. A new, four-wheel multi-terrain anti-lock braking system (ABS) automatically selects the optimal ABS profile to provide the most suitable brake force for on- and off-road driving surfaces. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) balances braking forces between the front and rear brakes, while Brake Assist (BA) provides auxiliary force to assist the driver during emergency braking. Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) helps maintain traction during acceleration by controlling engine output and braking forces to the wheel, distributing the drive force that might have been lost to the wheels and tires that have traction. VSC (with a cut-off switch) helps maintain directional control during cornering by manipulating engine torque and individual wheel-braking influence if it detects tire slippage.

Land Cruiser features 10 standards airbags: driver and front passenger dual-stage advanced airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; front- and second-row seat-mounted side airbags; and three-row roll-sensing side curtain airbags with a roll-sensing cutoff switch.

A direct tire pressure monitor system (TPMS) helps to alert the driver to severe pressure drops in any of the tires, including the full-size spare. A parking sonar system uses ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear bumpers to sense obstacles.

All eight seating positions feature three-point seatbelts. Active headrests on the driver and front passenger seats move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest. An available advanced seatbelt system is designed to retract the front seatbelts when the brakes are suddenly applied or when tire slippage is detected by the VSC system. New for Land Cruiser is a Pre-Collision System designed to detect other vehicles and obstacles in its path and help optimize the restraining performance of the front passenger seatbelts if a collision is imminent.

Comfort and Convenience
With 28 total air vents, the four-zone climate control system is designed to bathe occupants in comfortable air -- even during extreme heat -- rather than simply projecting streams of cool air at them. Kia Ray EV Debuts in Korea

Kia has launch its Ray EV in Korea, which is based on the Ray CUV that went on sale earlier in 2011. The automaker plans to manufacture 2,500 units for government departments and public offices in 2012.

The Ray EV is based on the gas-engined Kia Ray, which also is not available here. It trades the standard car’s 1.0-liter engine for a 67-hp electric motor that can produce 123 lb-ft of torque. Energy comes from a 16.4-kWh lithium-ion battery that needs six hours to charge at 220 volts, or 25 minutes using a super-high-voltage quick charger. Kia claims it will have a range of about 86 miles.

The Ray EV weighs 187 kg more than the gasoline model, but the 167 Nm on call ensures responsive performance, Kia says. In terms of performance, the Ray EV does the 0-100 km/h run in 15.9 seconds, while top speed is 130 km/h. As for recharging times, it’s six hours using a 220V household supply and just 25 minutes in fast-charge mode.

Other features include a regenerative braking system, Virtual Engine Sound System for speeds below 20 kph (12 mph), Hill Assist Control to prevent roll-back and two inlet charging ports located in the front grille and fuel filler cap (for regular models) for normal and fast charging.

(SEOUL) December 22, 2011 - Kia Motors introduced Korea's first electric vehicle today (Thursday), with the launch of the new Kia Ray EV - a zero-emissions city car with lively performance and a range of up to 139 km (86 miles) on a single charge.

For supply exclusively to the domestic Korean market, the Kia Ray EV is a close relative of Kia's 1.0-liter gasoline powered Ray CUV, which went on sale in Korea last month. It shares that model's major dimensions and, in a global first for an EV manufacturer, can share a production line with conventional combustion-engine cars.

The front-wheel drive Ray EV is powered by a 50kW electric motor and a high-capacity 16.4 kWh lithium ion polymer battery pack that is engineered for a 10-year life cycle and skillfully packaged under the rear seat and cabin floor.

Although the Ray EV weighs 187 kg more than the gasoline model, the electric motor's generous torque - 167 Nm (an increase of 77%) - ensures responsive performance. The EV's acceleration is brisker than the gasoline models (0-to-100 kph in 15.9 seconds), while top speed is 130 kph (81 mph). Recharging times are six hours using a 220V household supply and just 25 minutes in fast-charge mode.

The Ray EV's automatic transmission offers the driver a choice of two modes while in ‘D' drive. ‘E' (or ‘eco') mode optimizes the delivery of the motor's torque to achieve minimum battery consumption and maximum driving range. ‘B' (or ‘brake') mode can be selected when driving downhill on highways and on mountain roads to maximize braking power.

Bearing the same striking exterior styling as its gasoline cousin, the Kia Ray EV has four small distinguishing points. A flap in the front radiator grille covers an electricity inlet for a 220V supply for the slow recharge mode, another inlet (for the fast recharge mode) is fitted in the same location as the fuel intake of the regular models, special decals on each front door proclaim the ‘Zero Emissions EV' message and super-smooth 14-inch alloy wheels improve aerodynamic performance by minimizing drag.

Inside, the Ray EV features a unique instrument cluster, displaying electric motor operation, battery status and distance to recharge. It is also equipped with the first-ever EV-specific navigation system that features a 7-inch screen and provides crucial information for EV drivers such as the nearest locations of the slow/fast recharging stations. The display shows a circular shaped area in which the model can travel with its current level of battery power, so that drivers can see which destinations are reachable without a recharge.

Currently there are 500 slow/fast recharge stations in Korea, and the government plans to increase that figure to 3,100 stations by the end of 2012.

The Kia Ray EV embodies numerous innovations. The electric motor achieves 93% efficiency, which is the best in its segment. The lithium ion polymer battery's cell is optimized and highly integrated, which has enabled its weight to be reduced by 13% and its energy density to be increased by 15% compared to competitors' systems.

The on-board charger, current inverter, high-low voltage converter and EV-specific VCU (vehicle control unit) each features advances over previous equipment.

Ray EV is also equipped with a new type of regenerative braking system featuring an Active Hydraulic Booster that utilizes the electric motor, instead of the gasoline engine in the regular model, to create hydraulic pressure for the brake system. The result is consistent brake pedal force throughout a wide variety of driving conditions and the ability to harvest excess energy and use it to recharge the car's battery.

Unlike regular gasoline vehicles, Ray EV generates no engine noise, which can be a potential problem with pedestrians being unaware of the approaching car. To prevent accidents, Kia has fitted Ray EV with a VESS (Virtual Engine Sound System). When driven at speeds below 20 kph (12 mph) this system delivers a mixture of recorded gasoline engine noises, which are also emitted whenever the car is backing up.

Japan and the USA are already considering the introduction of a legal requirement for EVs to have a virtual engine sound, and Kia has taken the first step to commercialize this system in order to anticipate the global industry's trend.

To ensure that the Ray EV is as safe as gasoline cars, it is equipped with six air-bags, and electronic stability features - VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) and HAC (Hill Assist Control, to prevent roll-back) - as standard.

During 2012, Kia is planning to manufacture 2,500 units of the Ray EV, which will be provided to government departments and public offices as part of Kia's long-term real-world research and development program to provide environmentally friendly transport to Kia customers around the world during the next decade.

2012 Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept

Volkswagen has releases photos and details for the Cross Coupe concept, which will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show this week.

The Cross Coupe is smaller than a Tiguan at 171.1 inches in overall length, although VW says it stretches a bit longer than a standard Golf. However, its 103.5-inch wheelbase is long for the A segment, which combines with its wide track to give it an especially poised style.

The concept is a four-seater featuring bucket seats with integrated headrests. Adding versatility, both the back seats and front passenger seat can be folded flat to increase cargo capacity. While subcompact trunk space is only 13.4 cubic feet, cargo capacity increases to 43.4 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded.

The specific displacement of the engine wasn’t divulged in the release, but based on the power output of 148 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque, we’re lead to believe it’s the company’s 1.4-liter TSI gasoline turbo engine.

VOLKSWAGEN CROSS COUPÉ MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT AT THE TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Compact hybrid crossover SUV mixes style, performance, and efficiency

Wolfsburg/Tokyo - At the Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen is revealing the Cross Coupé, a concept SUV that looks towards the future. This all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid vehicle shows how Volkswagen designers could envision a crossover that's part four-door coupe, part compact SUV. The design team, led by Walter de Silva and Klaus Bischoff, has created an intriguing study that impressively combines the best of the two worlds. Original, strong in character, and sculptural and dynamic, the Cross Coupé hints at the future of SUV design at Volkswagen.

The sporty Cross Coupé concept is based on Volkswagen's new modular transverse matrix (MQB)-the first time a vehicle has been shown off this platform. The four-seater SUV is powered by two electric motors and a direct-injection turbocharged gasoline (TSI®) engine. The Cross Coupé can drive a distance of up to 25 miles purely on electric power.

Long wheelbase, short overhangs

The concept car is longer than a VW Golf and shorter than a Tiguan at 171.1 inches overall. At 73.5 inches wide and 60.0 inches high, it also falls neatly in between these two bestsellers. The Cross Coupé is thus sized in the globally popular A-segment. With a very long wheelbase of 103.5 inches-two inches longer than a Golf and an inch longer than the Tiguan-compared to its overall length, the Cross Coupé has correspondingly short overhangs: 33.7 and 33.9 inches, respectively, at the front and back. The powerful, muscular proportions are underscored by the wide 62.4-inch front and 63.5-inch rear track dimensions.

The Cross Coupé is still designed to be practical off-road as well as on pavement. The front approach angle, for instance, is 24.2 degrees and the rear departure angle is an impressive 32.5 degrees. The Cross Coupé reinforces its off-road credentials with excellent ground clearance.

Forward Looking Design

The defining features of the Cross Coupé's styling are the long hood, a completely new frontal aesthetic, the set-back passenger compartment, and the low window line for an SUV. The Cross Coupé looks like it has been milled from a solid block, with extremely precise and modern lines. It also shows the direction in which Volkswagen design is developing.

One striking element is a shoulder line-the tornado line-that looks as if it has been cut with a razor blade. This runs just below the frameless windows, extending from the front to the rear fenders. The decidedly flared fenders create a very powerful stance and produce a silhouette that is reminiscent of a sports car, allied with the robustness of an SUV. The 20-inch alloy wheels, equipped with 265/45-section tires, enhance the sporty look. At the rear, a voluminous coupe-like C-post rises up over the wheelarches.

Radical Front Lights: The potential of the Volkswagen design DNA developed by Walter de Silva (Group Chief Designer) and Klaus Bischoff (Volkswagen Chief Designer) is shown in the concept car's front section. In this instance, the characteristic horizontal lines of the "Volkswagen visage" become a link between present and future. Unlike today's models, the designers have physically merged the twin bi-xenon headlamps with the radiator grille's chrome-plated fins. Two chrome bars that ascend to the sides of the vehicle and link the headlamps are part of an entirely new lighting concept; the lower of the two chrome fins contains the Daytime Running Lights and the fin above it incorporates the turn signals.

The center of the bumper has an area painted in the vehicle's color: a precisely shaped character line extends upwards to form a homogenous unit with the bars of the radiator grille. Right at the bottom of the bumper is another air intake, which is fitted with two additional smaller chrome bars. To the left and right of each inlet are the LED foglights.

Coupe-style roofline: The shallow line of the side windows also influences the rear of the car. The steeply raked rear window is typical of a coupe. The rear edge of the hatchback is finished off by a spoiler, which optically extends the roof surface and also optimizes the aerodynamics. The rear light clusters are kept slim and, in similar fashion to their counterparts on the latest production models such as the new CC, they feature a delicate, pale, horizontal bar that makes them look very elegant. The chunky rear bumper is, however, typical of an SUV and features integrated exhaust pipes on either side.

The Best of Both Worlds

Inside, the worlds of the SUV and the coupe form an exciting alliance. This four-seater has a significantly sportier design than conventional SUVs. For example, the dashboard has the precise lines of a coupe's, yet is raised up like an SUV's. The surface of the dashboard exudes a very refined quality, yet is also very robust. This robustness is also a feature of the controls and touch points inside the vehicle: for instance, the stability control systems and driving modes are controlled via two aluminum-alloy rotary switches, with the button for the electric parking brake located between them. The strikingly wide shift lever for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG®) transmission is also made of aluminum: as well as providing some visual fun, it also is pleasing to the touch. Two robust but elegant grab handles are a feature of the center stack, which also incorporates the HVAC controls and air vents, and a touchscreen display that monitors all relevant vehicle functions, from on- and off-road navigation to the sound system.

Programmable instruments: Arranged behind the three-spoke steering wheel is a user-programmable instrument cluster. The driving mode‘s rotary control knob can be used to select between "Sport," "City," and "Offroad." The screen display varies according to the mode selected: for instance, "Offroad" mode features a compass and a topographic map. Each of the three modes has a customized screen layout and different color scheme. Positioned centrally between the twin round dials is another multifunction color display that shows vehicle information, the phone menu, audio details, and additional navigational information.

Designed for long journeys: The Cross Coupé is fitted with four individual bucket seats that have solidly integrated headrests. The four passengers have ample leg-, head- and shoulder-room. The backs of the rear seats and the front passenger's seat can be folded fully forwards to accommodate bulky items such as surfboards and bicycles. The seat backs have an outer synthetic covering so that they form a durable surface for such loads when they are folded down. There's 13.4 cubic feet of trunk space behind the rear seats, which expands to 43.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Innovative Hybrid Powertrain

The Cross Coupé has not one but three power sources, which work together efficiently as a hybrid system. Underhood, there's a 148-horsepower (110 kW) TSI engine that delivers 155 pound-feet of torque as well as an electric motor that makes 54 hp (40 kW) and 133 lb-ft. Together or individually these two motors power the front axle. If the Cross Coupé is to be used in all-wheel-drive or pure electric mode, a further electric motor that is integrated as a co-axial drive unit in the back axle powers the rear wheels. This second electric motor generates up to 114 hp (85 kW) and develops 199 lb-ft of torque. The overall output of the system (gasoline engine and electric motors) is a maximum of 262 hp (195 kW).

Because the battery is mounted low, inside where a conventional driveshaft would run in the "transmission tunnel," the vehicle has a low center of gravity. Combined with the balanced layout of the power sources, the concept has the dynamic handling of a coupe while retaining the functionality of an SUV.

Electric Avenue: When the vehicle is being driven purely on electric power, the motors receive their current from an eight-module 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. An electronic power control module, operating at around 370 volts and integrated into the engine compartment, manages the flow of high-voltage energy to and from the battery and the electric motors. Meanwhile, the Cross Coupé's low-voltage electrical system is supplied with the necessary 12 volts through a DC/DC converter. The battery is charged either via 230-volt external sources or-when in motion-via the TSI engine and front- and rear-axle regeneration.

Highly Efficient: With a full tank of fuel the Cross Coupé weighs 3854 pounds, distributed 58 percent front and 42 percent rear. The payload is 992 pounds.

In purely electric mode, the vehicle can be driven up to 25 miles, emissions free. In the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the fuel consumption is 87 mpg (2.7 liters/100 km), equating to CO2 emissions of just 62 g/km. With a 14.5-gallon fuel tank, the theoretical range in hybrid mode is 506 miles: add in the electric range, and the Cross Coupé can do 531 miles without stopping for fuel.

Sustainable and Sporty: Despite the focus on sustainability, the concept car is still sporty. The Cross Coupé accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 7.0 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph. In electric-only mode, the top speed is governed to 75 mph. Both the gas mileage and driving performance are positively influenced by the Cross Coupé's excellent aerodynamics and low overall height (for an SUV), with an overall drag coefficient of just 0.329.

How the hybrid drive system works: Both electric motors help (boost) the gasoline engine (TSI) during acceleration. As mentioned above, however, they can also power the concept car on its own for a distance of up to 25 miles, depending on conditions. In this instance, by opening the clutch, the TSI is disconnected from the drivetrain and switched off. The clutch on the gearbox side, however, remains closed and the seven-speed DSG thus remains connected. Cross Coupé drivers can also choose to drive relatively long distances on pure electric power (as long as the battery has enough charge). To do so the driver simply presses the relevant driving mode button on the centre console next to the shift lever. As soon as the TSI needs to be brought back into play due to the battery's level of charge or any other parameters, the engine starts up-almost imperceptibly for driver and passengers-and smoothly engages with the drivetrain.

Charging at the press of a button: Whenever the Cross Coupé's brakes are applied, both electric motors act as generators, utilizing the braking energy to charge the battery (regeneration). The driver can (via another button next to the shift lever) also consciously charge the battery from the TSI engine-for instance, in order to have sufficient electric power to drive later in a regulated zone that's preserved exclusively for zero-emission electric vehicles. At all times, the current electric range and the Cross Coupé's overall range are displayed on the instrument panel.

Multi-mode Drivetrain: Based on the amount of drive (for instance, loss of traction on the front axle) or through the driver consciously switching to all-wheel or electric mode, the rear electric motor engages in an instant. In general there are three driving modes available to the driver: City (eco-mode with minimal fuel consumption); Sport (dynamic driving); and Offroad (permanent all-wheel drive).

The new Avensis has some canny changes across the range including sharper styling, better driving dynamics and a quieter cabin. The top-selling 2.0-litre D-4D engine has lower CO2 emissions at 119g/km, which will certainly help with its ongoing appeal to fleet buyers.

VÄTH has introduced a new tuning program for the Mercedes CLS 63 AMG. It includes a V63RS package which enables the engine to produce 658 PS (484 kW / 649 hp) and 960 Nm (708 lb-ft) of torque.

On the styling front, the model can be equipped with a trunk-mounted spoiler, a rear diffuser and 20-inch wheels with high-performance tyres. Other goodies include lowering springs and an upgraded braking system. Lastly, the cabin can be outfitted with a sport steering wheel, carbon-fibre trim and a revised speedometer that goes up to 360 km/h.

The 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine has been gifted with the Vath V63RS package, which upgrades the unit from 525 h and 700 Nm to 660 hp and 990 Nm.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH will field a hybrid racer in the Le Mans 24 Hours and other 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship races.

The Japanese company will develop a brand-new, gasoline-electric hybrid racer that will compete in the top LMP1 class. The chassis will be built by Toyota Motorsport in its Cologne, Germany headquarters. The engine used will come from Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan.

The Japanese automaker expects its new attack on Le Mans give better results than their lasta attempt in the late 90′s, the GT One, which was fast but not fast enough to get a win.

In addition Toyota will compete with the new hybrid racer in other races next year in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Toyota will compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2012 with a new hybrid power sports car. Its return to the world's most famous endurance race will be with a new LMP1 chassis designed, developed and produced by Toyota Motorsport in Germany, equipped with a hybrid petrol powertrain engineered by Toyota in Japan.

Participation at Le Mans will be one of a number of races Toyota proposes to enter in the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship, a competition that will enable it to further explore the potential of its world-leading hybrid technology.

The new team will be based at Toyota Motorsport's Cologne headquarters and it is expected that the new car will be rolled out early in 2012 for an extensive pre-season testing programme. Further details about the team will be announced later.

Tadashi Yamashina, Toyota Motor Corporation Senior Managing Officer and Toyota Motorsport Chairman, said: "Toyota has entered Le Mans before, but by using our hybrid technology this time will be a completely new challenge. Plans for the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 2.2 car have yet to be finalised. Of the 20 limited edition 2.0-litre cars launched in 2010, four remain unsold and it’s possible MUGEN Euro may offer them with the reworked engine.

One of the most exclusive and explosive hot hatches of recent years has been given an extra dose of MUGEN power.

The Honda Civic Type R MUGEN debuted in 2010 to near-universal acclaim, and a 20-strong limited edition production run of the hand-built, motorsport-derived machines went on sale to UK enthusiasts.

Now technicians at Northampton-based MUGEN Euro have worked their magic again, producing a unique version with even more power and torque.

The cylinder bore and stroke have been increased to create an overall capacity of 2,156cc, so the car has been christened the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN 2.2.

The result of the change is a boost in engine output from 240 to 260PS, and additional torque is available throughout the rev range. Peak torque is now 240Nm at 6,000rpm. Compared to a standard Honda Civic Type R, both power and torque are up 30 per cent.

When coupled to the host of motorsport-derived components created exclusively by MUGEN - including sports suspension, uprated brakes and a stunning performance bodykit - the MUGEN 2.2 represents the ultimate expression of the Honda Civic Type R philosophy.

It has been created as a fitting tribute to the highly successful Honda K20 2.0-litre petrol engine, which has ceased production in Japan. Homologated by MUGEN as an FIA Group N race series engine, the K20 has long been the powerplant of choice with tuners and motorsports competitors who want the very best in naturally aspirated performance.

The new compact five-door vehicle will reveal the look of the company’s sixth model line, set to become the spearhead of the Czech carmaker’s planned model offensive as part of its 2018 growth strategy set last year, where the brand is looking to increase its sales to 1.5 million vehicles by then.

The MissionL is a Golf-sized hatchback that will sit between the Fabia supermini and Octavia small family car. There’s no official word on what Skoda will call the production car. Rumours suggesting the car will be called the Felicia are said to be wide of the mark.

Mladá Boleslav, 5 September, 2011 - ŠKODA will present a world-premier design concept called MissionL at this year's Frankfurt International Motor Show. Close to the final production-ready design, this concept car reveals the look of the ŠKODA's sixth model line that is to become symbolic of the Czech carmaker's planned model offensive.

The new compact five-door vehicle will be launched in Europe, Russia and China. In line with the brand's internationalisation principles, this compact ‘liftback' will feature specific modifications in each of these regions. In addition, the Indian market will have its own version, a compact sedan. These steps are in line with the goals of ŠKODA's 2018 growth strategy that were set last year. The brand intends to increase its sales to 1.5 million vehicles by 2018.

"Revealing the look of our new compact model, the MissionL shows exactly the direction our brand is going to take," says ŠKODA Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. "The world premiere in Frankfurt gives a clear signal that ŠKODA is going full steam ahead now. We are going to present a new vehicle every six months over the next two or three years."

In line with its 2018 growth strategy, the brand is gearing up, investing heavily in new models, markets and production capacities. Starting in mid 2013, the Yeti will be launched in the Chinese market and will be produced locally. Furthermore, ŠKODA (in cooperation with Shanghai Volkswagen) will produce a new compact model for this market from 2013, increasing the number of models produced in China to five.

The brand will also expand production in Russia through the Volkswagen Group's partnership with the Russian-based car manufacturer GAZ Group. The GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod will start producing the Yeti in the last quarter of 2012. In India, ŠKODA will start production of a brand new compact sedan this year. The brand also remains focused on its traditional markets - Europe and the Czech Republic, its home market. Beside the Fabia and Octavia, ŠKODA's main plant in Mladá Boleslav will produce a third model; the brand is already increasing the capacity of its production lines. Starting in late 2012, ŠKODA will also manufacture the automatic twin-clutch gearbox DQ200 in its plant in Vrchlabí.

The joint concept vehicle smart forvision presented at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt combines a futuristic design with technologies relating to energy efficiency, lightweight design and temperature management.

"With the forvision smart is doing justice to its role as Daimler's think tank for urban mobility. We are presenting numerous world premieres that make uncompromising electric mobility possible. With the clear objective of greatly increasing the zero-emission range we concerned ourselves with all factors that influence this on the vehicle. This resulted in completely new concepts and materials in the areas of insulation, reflection, lightweight design and energy management. In addition to transparent organic solar cells, transparent and energy-saving light-emitting diodes and infrared-reflective films and coatings, high-performance foams are used for insulation against cold and heat. smart is also setting new standards of lightweight design with the use of the first all-plastic wheels", says Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart. Thanks to the combination of smart's automotive expertise and BASF's material and system competence a vehicle has been created which showcases technologies for sustainable and holistic electric mobility of the future. The researchers and designers intentionally realised a mixture of visionary materials and technologies in the concept vehicle - some of these are still at a laboratory stage, while others have a realistic chance of entering series production.

Energy efficiency: light and energy from above
The hexagonal transparent areas on the roof of the smart forvision are an eye-catching feature - as the first light-transmitting roof that also generates energy. Transparent solar cells covering the entire roof surface are the technology used here. They are based on organic dyes embedded in a sandwich roof. The transparent dyes of the solar cells are light-activated. Even in diffused light and poor light conditions they generate enough energy to power the multimedia components and the three fans that assist with climate management in the vehicle interior. If the vehicle is standing in the sun the ventilation is permanently operated with the help of these solar cells, keeping the car cool. This new photovoltaic technology opens up further efficiency potential and the energy generated can be used for further applications in the car.

There is an additional new feature under the solar cells: transparent OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) illuminate the vehicle interior when the door is opened or a button pressed. When switched off they allow for a clear view outside. This results in a glass roof effect during the daytime, whilst the areas are pleasantly illuminated without any dazzle at night. Thanks to a free choice of colours the new OLEDs do not only offer more design freedom, they also consume less than half as much energy as conventional energy-saving lamps.

Lightweight design: different, better, stylish
In the smart forvision a world first leads to a considerable weight reduction and a unique design: the first all-plastic wheel suitable for high-volume production. In its current development status, the wheel developed by BASF from a new high-performance material results in a considerable weight saving of three kilograms per wheel. Unlike conventional polyamide composite materials this new plastic has long reinforcing fibres which improve its mechanical properties. The result: excellent thermal and chemical stability, dynamic strength, toughness and good continuous operating characteristics. First intensive product tests at smart show the performance capability of the all-plastic wheel and confirm the potential for possible use in production vehicles.
In addition to the tridion passenger cell, further components such as the doors are made of carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin - a high-performance composite material. The use of such materials enables a weight saving of more than 50 percent to be achieved compared with steel, or 30 percent compared with aluminium. Thanks to short hardening times the resin systems from BASF are also suitable for producing larger volumes.

Heating: close to the body and efficient
The multifunctional, comfortable and lightweight seats in the smart forvision offer a unique combination of efficient temperature management and an energy-saving lightweight design. Here, several innovative products are combined with one another for the first time. A new, lightweight, self-supporting plastic seat shell forms the basis.

Numerous studies have shown that the body only absorbs heat efficiently through certain contact points. This is why "e-textiles" - thin fabrics with custom-tailored conductive coatings - replace conventional seat heating in the smart forvision. With direct heating close to the body in the middle and lower back area of the seats they provide for a pleasant feeling of warmth. The energy, space and weight-saving e-textile technology is also found in the armrests of the doors and ensures that body contact points sensitive to the cold are also warmed in this area.

The innovations continue with the seat foam, which provides for both comfort and weight savings. The material from BASF is around 10 to 20 percent lighter than other materials and enables different degrees of hardness to be realised in different areas of the upholstery in a single work operation - resulting in clear ergonomic advantages.

Superabsorbent containing fleece fabric integrated in the seat greatly enhances seating comfort through its passive climate control. Compared with conventional climate-controlled seats the lightweight seat in the smart forvision does not have the complexity and energy requirement of mechanical ventilation.

Temperature management: heat stays outside
As a large amount of energy is needed to air condition and heat a vehicle, temperature management was a key focus area for the smart and BASF researchers. A whole package of measures has been implemented in the smart forvision to ensure more efficient air conditioning of the vehicle.
At the same time they make energy-intensive heating of the whole interior superfluous.

A heat shield that has not been previously used for automotive applications consists of a new kind of infrared-reflective film from BASF applied in the windscreen and side windows, protecting the car interior from heating up. Integrated between the panes of the safety glass the metal-free film ensures that the infrared rays are effectively reflected. Thanks to its high transparency in the visible range it can also be applied to tinted windows and guarantees an unprecedented level of reflection of sunlight and heat. Unlike metallized films, which are already used in some vehicles, the new film reflects only the infrared rays of the sun. Radio waves needed to use GPS, Bluetooth, mobile phones or for toll collection pass through the glass unhindered.

The high-performance foams from BASF fitted in the bodypanels also provide for a pleasant climate inside the car. They keep the vehicle pleasantly cool in summer and also insulate it against the cold in winter. Thanks to their high efficiency even in a small width, they can be fitted everywhere in the vehicle. With this innovative insulation system in the smart forvision, the two companies are breaking new ground in the automotive sector.

Cool coatings - cool interior
The infrared-reflective and extremely scratch-resistant coating system covers two important aspects at once. Firstly, it supports the extensive temperature management system and, secondly, the brilliant and high-quality look of the coating underlines the unique design of the smart forvision. The concept vehicle features a white special-effect coating with glass flakes that create a gleaming metallic look. An important side effect: the colour white reflects heat rays from sun and light particularly well. But even surfaces coated with dark colours stay much cooler thanks to special colour pigments from BASF. They ensure that heat radiation is reflected rather than absorbed. This leads to a temperature reduction of up to 20 degrees Celsius on the paint surface and of up to approximately four degrees in the vehicle interior.

Futuristic design trendsetter
Painted in pearl white and accentuated by the tridion safety cell coated with a copper-coloured liquid metal paint, there is a deliberate connection between the basic structure of the smart forvision and the design of the smart fortwo. Trendy yet high quality - the aluminium flakes in the liquid metal paintwork create a reflecting surface on the safety cell, changing between light and dark depending on the viewer's perspective. Both the panels and the cell of the smart forvision are additionally painted with an extremely scratch-resistant clear coat.

The faceted side doors with integrated door openers are a real eye-catcher. Here, plastic is presented in a new, expressive and three-dimensional form; a reinterpretation that is only possible at smart thanks to the consistent use of plastic. The precise facets give the area stability and enable a smaller material thickness to be used. Optimal use is made of the possibilities offered by plastic as a material. In contrast, the front and rear have a softer design with smooth transitions from the doors. Just as the integrated door handle does not need an additional component, the familiar smart air inlet is represented by small hexagons located right on the outer skin.
The jet-like rear lights are reminiscent of small aircraft turbines and give the rear a futuristic and sporty look. Inside the lights, small propellers convey the air from the inside to the outside. In addition to all the light functions needed, transparent stacks in the form of rings around the lights also show the charge status of the battery during charging.

The headlamps are emphasised by a ring comprising the daytime driving lights and indicator functions. The lights add to the likeable expression of the smart forvision.

Doors open to the future
With a mix of polygonal surfaces and organic shapes the interior of the smart forvision builds a bridge to the architectural design handwriting of the exterior. This also applies to the colour concept: a cool white dominates in the interior as well, accentuated by the inner part of the instrument panel in liquid copper. Hexagons in the form of white rubber nubs on a white floor are a reference to the design idiom of the overall vehicle, as is the tone-in-tone design of the seat upholstery.

The faceted surface of the side doors is also found on their inside. The polygonal surfaces with integrated armrests and stowage compartments curve into the interior. They are painted in the body colour and feature coloured LEDs. These guide the driver with a light animation running from the outside to the inside when the door is opened and closed. After closing the door the animation changes to unobtrusive ambient lighting.

The elliptical user interface with a copper coloured frame - matching the lightweight tridion - is semi-transparent when switched off. When the vehicle is switched on all cockpit information is then projected onto the transparent surface. The driver uses a touchscreen to switch between operating menus.

The white steering wheel that is reminiscent of an aircraft yoke additionally gives the cockpit a futuristic look. As well as function buttons the LED display for the battery charge status is found here.

The smart forvision not only shows that electric mobility can make emission-free driving possible. At the same time, it paves the way for new technologies in the automotive sector. German tuner Novitec has released a new package for Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the transformed Italian hatchback has impressive style and performance, and also excites us about the possibility of such a car arriving on American shores.

The Novitec Alfa Romeo Giulietta has also been equipped with a sport muffler with various tailpipe variants (two of four pipe designs), plus new sport springs which lower the centre of gravity by 35 mm. NOVITEC Refines the Alfa Romeo Giulietta
Engine Tuning with up to 261 hp, 20-Inch Wheels and Sporty Design

Power, handling and sporty design: NOVITEC, globally leading tuner of Alfa Romeo automobiles, now also refines the Giulietta. The exclusive program comprises engine tuning for diesel and gasoline engines with up to 261 hp / 192 kW of power, a sport muffler with various tailpipe variants, wheels with diameters of up to 20 inches with the corresponding suspension solutions, and a sporty styled aerodynamic-enhancement package that lends the Italian car an even more striking profile.

Power is no sin and thus NOVITEC now also offers custom-tailored versions of its tried and proven POWERJET 2 tuning modules for the turbocharged gasoline models of the Giulietta. After the plug-and-play installation of the auxiliary control module the 1.4 TB 16V model produces 141 hp / 104 kW of power, up from standard 120 hp / 88 kW. Power output of the NOVITEC-tuned MultiAir engine with identical displacement jumps from 170 hp / 125 kW to a powerful 195 hp / 141 kW.

NOVITEC engine tuning is also available for the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine of the Giulietta. The POWERJET 2 module bumps power output of the four-valve, four-cylinder engine by 26 hp / 19 kW and boosts peak torque to 386 Nm. Thus equipped the Italian speedster produces 261 hp / 192 kW and sprints from rest to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds on the way to a new top speed of 251 km/h. Despite its outstanding efficiency the engine tuning is a great bargain at just EUR 419.

NOVITEC power tuning is also available for the three turbodiesel engines of the Giulietta. The POWERRAIL 5 module, which also installs easily by means of a plug connector, lends the 1.6 JTD 16V model an extra 15 hp / 11 kW of power.

In the 2.0 JTD 16V model with a standard power output of 140 hp / 103 kW the auxiliary control unit unleashes an extra 20 hp / 14.7 kW. Power output of the also available 170-hp diesel model with custom-calibrated NOVITEC auxiliary control unit jumps to 195 hp / 143 kW while peak torque grows by 50 Nm to 400 Nm. The NOVITEC POWERRAIL 5 modules are available for EUR 335.

With or without engine tuning: the NOVITEC stainless-steel sport rear mufflers, available in various designs with two or four tailpipes, lend all models a sportier exhaust note.

Another focal point of the NOVITEC tuning program for the Giulietta lies in the handling. The measures include custom-tailored alloy wheels with diameters of 18, 19 or 20 inches. The king-sized version features NOVITEC N10 20-inch wheels, available with a silver or matte-black finish. In size 8.5Jx20 and shod with size 235/50 R 20 Pirelli P Zero tires they perfectly fill the wheel wells.

The perfect complement to these wheels and tires are either NOVITEC sport springs, which lower the ride height of the Giulietta by some 35 millimeters, or the stainless-steel coil-over suspension with adjustable ride height and damper rates. It lends the Alfa Romeo a firmer setup and provides infinitely variable ride-height lowering between 35 and 75 millimeters.

The NOVITEC body kit offers sporty design at its best in combination with efficient aerodynamic function.

The front of the vehicle undergoes an exciting facelift with the help of EUR 167 spoiler corners that attach to the left and right side of the front fascia, and the centrally mounted cup spoiler for EUR 83. But that's not all: together these components also further reduce lift on the front axle.

The NOVITEC side skirts for EUR 234 give the Giulietta a lower, sleeker appearance. The rear of the vehicle receives some added profile with the help of the rear fascia with diffuser look. This component is available for EUR 167 in different versions with precise cutouts for the various exhaust tip variants of the NOVITEC sport rear muffler.

The NOVITEC components come with general operating certificates, thus saving customers costly and time-intensive individual technical inspections. They also eliminate the need to register the body components in the vehicle registration documents.

Infiniti has unveiled the FX50 Performance Concept. The FX50 Performance Concept was designed with contributions from Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel, who serves as a brand ambassador for Infiniti.

Unique elements of the concept include the redesigned front bumper with LED daytime lights built carbon fiber apron whose shape mimics the design of a Formula 1 car's fender.

A lot of carbon fiber is used to provide a nice contrast to the white body color, which includes side skirts, the roof spoiler, and the rear bumper. And to make it more distinguishable, Vettel badges are placed on both sides of the front fenders.

Other exterior highlights include a carbon fibre front wing, which is said to be modelled on the Red Bull Racing F1 car’s front wing, a set of LEDs embedded into the lower front bumper bar, and removed roof rails from the standard FX50 to provide a sleeker look.

SEAT has released the first pictures of the 2012 Exeo facelift, ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The front fascia of Seat's 2012 Exeo facelift shows new headlights, with integrated LED daytime running lights, a new honeycomb front grille, and optional bi-xenon headlamps. Seat is also offering with the 2012 Exeo facelift a set of newly designed 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels.

According to the automaker the facelifted Seat Exeo is powered by an efficient 2.0 TDI common rail diesel engine which is emitting just 129 g/km of CO2 and it’s offering the start /stop system, which will please its future UK buyers who demand low emissions levels for their executive models.

Fuel consumption figures have also improved to a combined 5.2-litres per 100 Km (5.3-litres on the ST), and according to the automaker this is only the first step, as from 2012 the Exeo range will also receive Start Stop engine technology which will further lower consumption.

From the autumn, Exeo's distinctive design will be further enhanced and the powerful TDI engines become even more efficient. Fuel consumption will also drop below the current combined figure of 5,2 l per 100 km (5,3 l on the ST).

And the introduction of these improvements to Exeo's efficiency are just the first step, with additional improvements to Exeo's efficiency scheduled to arrive in 2012 thanks to the fitment of SEAT's Start/Stop engine technology.

The addition of this technology - which stops the engine when the car is stationary, such as when waiting at a red traffic light - will significantly reduce consumption and emissions, with a target figure of sub-120g for CO2. Exeo's dynamic driving performance will not be compromised despite the reduction in consumption and emissions.

This low level of emissions will make Exeo one of the most efficient cars in its class and will further enhance its competitive appeal, particularly for fleets where emissions are a key purchasing factor.

The many strengths of the SEAT Exeo include its clear design language. With the redesigned front end, both the saloon and the estate are now even more expressive. The new, optional bi-xenon headlamps adopt the "arrow" theme that is so characteristic of SEAT design. Volkswagen has officially unveiled the new Up! city car before its official debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Up!, which will be built in Bratislava, Slovakia, where VW also makes bodies for Porsche Cayenne SUV, is 3.54 meters (11.6 feet) long and 1.64 meters wide, marginally bigger than the Toyota Aygo which measures 3.42 meters and 1.62 meters.

Powering the Up! is a trio of all-new three-cylinder engines. Most likely to be seen when the car goes on sale in the U.S. are the two gasoline-powered engines which make 59 and 74 hp, respectively. Standard is a start/stop system to help save fuel, yielding returns of an estimated 56 mpg for the 59-hp engine and 55 mpg for the 74-hp engine. A 67-hp natural gas-powered engine will be offered shortly after the car’s launch that Volkswagen estimates will return up to 73 mpg. All three of the engine options for the Up! will be offered with a five-speed manual transmission. And coming in 2013, the 2009 E-Up! concept will come to life with a production version of an all-electric Up!.

The goal: to develop a small car with charisma, a small car with maximum space on a minimal footprint, a small car with the most fuel-efficient engines or an electric drive, a small car with intuitive infotainment and operating systems, a small car with the safety of a large car. The result is the new up! It measures a short 3.54 metres and is a specialist for everyday urban living that was thought through to the last detail. This car - like the larger Polo and the even larger Golf - will appeal to people of all ages and mobility wishes.

Affordable for everyone. In launching the up!, Volkswagen is not only putting a new car in motion; it is also redefining the parameters of customisation and financing. This means that along with clearly delineated equipment lines on the up!, new features will be offered such as up! boxes - e.g. box sets for shopping, long trips or for children on board. The up! will have an infotainment system that owners can tailor to their personal profiles using apps. And because a small car needs to be affordable, a new financing model known as AutoCredit2 that is exclusively tailored to up! buyers will offer greater financial freedom thanks to its flexible configuration options. And for many people, this will make the goal of driving a safe and economical new car more attainable than ever. Like the Beetle back in the 1950s, one could say that the up! is once again "democratising" car driving.

Launch in December. The up! will first be launched in the European market. It all starts in December. There are 3 versions for different budgets and needs: take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort-oriented one and high up! the top version. Directly at the car's market launch, there will also be 2 independent models based on the high up!: the up! black and the up! white.

New generation of engines

4.2 l/100 km with petrol engine. Debuting in the up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines. They output 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS. Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version (including a Stop/Start system): 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS) and 4.3 l/100 km (75 PS). Both of these 1.0-litre engines emit less than the 100 g/km CO2 limit. A natural gas engine with 50 kW / 68 PS with the same basic configuration will follow. Its combined fuel consumption of 3.2 kg/100 km (natural gas) is equivalent to a CO2 value of 86 g/km; as a BlueMotion Technology version the natural-gas powered up! even attains a low CO2 value of 79 g/km. There are also definite plans for an up! with an electric drive for the year 2013.

First small car with City Emergency Braking

Stops automatically. An important new safety technology system is the optional City Emergency Braking. It is automatically active at speeds under 30 km/h, and it uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an imminent collision. Depending on the vehicle's speed and the driving situation, City Emergency Braking can reduce accident severity by initiating automatic brake interventions - and possibly even avoid a crash. So far, the up! is the only vehicle in the segment to be offered with an emergency braking function for city driving.

Dimensions and styling for the world's metropolitan areas

Extremely long wheelbase. With its noted 3.54 metre length and 1.64 metre width, the up! is one of the smallest four-seat cars. The Volkswagen is 1.48 metres tall. Its overall length consists of conspicuously short body overhangs and a very long wheelbase (2.42 metres) - a body layout that fully utilises the space available in the new design. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand says: "If the goal is to maximise space, the ideal form for a small car would be a rectangular box. In the up! we were able to sculpt such a box with a clean and powerful design that does not lose sight of space utilisation." The front end of the up! reveals much about the car's character. Klaus Bischoff: "The face is unmistakably that of a genuine Volkswagen, but with a very independent personality. Naturally, the familiar styling characteristics of our brand face can also be found on the up! - the emphasis of horizontal elements and the connection of the grille and headlights to form a band, the accents created by small angles and the characteristic light signature of the headlights. But more than on any of the other models, the up! definitely shows a smile. The up! is simply appealing, and it appeals in a simple way!"

Uncompromisingly good use of interior space

Small giant. Space utilisation in the car is exceptionally good, because of its wheelbase - one of the longest in the segment - combined with an engine that is mounted well forward. Although the driver, front passenger and 2 rear passengers are travelling in a small car, it is by no means a cramped vehicle. On the contrary. Consider the boot: 251 litres are significantly more than is typical in the vehicle class of the up! When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space even increases to 951 litres. These two values show that in its interior the up! will be a giant among small cars.

An interior design that is fun

Lots of interior colour. Essentially, the up! interior has a very clean and well-organised layout. The new Volkswagen also offers numerous clever and detailed solutions, fun styling and a level of quality that will enhance the market segment. Especially high-end is the Dash Pad, an instrument pad extending crosswise in front of the driver and front passenger. Depending on the equipment line, either decor paint or one of the 5 body colours is used in the interior.

up! boxes - small things that make a big difference

The developers of the up! asked themselves whether everyday living with the car could be structured in a simpler and friendlier way. Their answer was a decisive yes! Because it is often the small things that make a big difference. And that is how the idea of the up! boxes came about. Small, lightweight boxes for a wide variety of situations and needs. Take the "kid box", for example, that was designed for parents with small children; it includes a bag for the thousand small items that are essential with small children; and of course a toy to cuddle with and a lunch box for the obligatory snacks. Other up! boxes will be called the "city box" and the "travel box". And their names are their agendas.

maps + more - the Portable Infotainment Device (PID)

Mobile Information. For the first time in a Volkswagen, the maps + more system is now being offered, a mobile Portable Infotainment Device (PID). In the economically priced up!, this is a system that is equally economical and was developed to organise the navigation, telephone, information and entertainment areas. In cooperation with Navigon, one of the world's leading suppliers of navigation systems, a special solution was tailored to the up! which is affordable for all buyers - maps + more. The user simply snaps the PID into place above the centre console. Unlike many other similar systems of this type, maps + more melds with the car's network of systems much better: navigation, telephone and infotainment can now be controlled and viewed via the PID touchscreen, and the touchscreen can also be used to view important vehicle information, such as the visual display of the ParkPilot (controls the car's distance to the next vehicle). Frankfurt Motor Show: Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

Ferrari's upcoming 458 Italia Spider Will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show at the beginning of next month.

Ferrar is also working on a sportier version known as the 458 Scuderia. No details on what type of performance upgrades we’ll see but expect the 458 Italia Scuderia to shed some pounds.

The 458 Italia Spider will still have Ferrari’s 570bhp V8 and stunning performance. Yes, the edge will come off that performance a little because the roof mechanism will be heavier and, we assume, Ferrari will have to stiffen up the 458 with an RSJ or two. But it will still be very quick.

The convertible 458 can be expected to benefit from chassis reinforcement to ensure the roof's absence does not rob the car of the track-ready handling Ferrari has engineered into the 458 Italia hardtop.

The V8 is rated at 570 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 540Nm or 398.2 lb-ft of peak torque at 6,000 rpm. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through Ferrari's 7-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox.

Frankfurt preview: Kia sports sedan

Kia plans to unveil a new sports sedan concept at the Frankfurt Motor show in September.

This being a teaser, details are scant. Kia says the concept is rear-wheel drive and seats four. If the concept uses the Genesis architecture, that makes it likely we'll find a V8 under the hood.

The overall look of the concept is quite striking, with the car’s rear end sporting design cues from the Audi A7 and Lamborghini Estoque concept. A few Aston Martin cues also look to me mixed in but the concept is, of course, sporting Kia’s signature grille.

The car will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show Kia stand in Hall 3.1, booth A21. They will also unveil the three-door version of the all-new Rio and a facelift version of the Kia Soul.

SsangYong has just released the first teaser photos of new compact crossover concept, the 1 XUV (Excellent User-Interface Vehicle), ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

SsangYong is a small South Korean manufacturer that only produces cars for the Asian markets. This car marks a major change in SsangYong design. They have been famous for designing some of the ugliest cars in the world, like Musso or the previous Korando. But in recent years thye’ve been working with ItalDesign and even hired some of top automotive execs from other companies.

The wraparound windscreen visually extends the glass area virtually uninterrupted to the large C-pillars, complemented by a full length glass roof.

The interior is also something special, featuring a new configurable seating design that offers 1+1+2 or 1+3 seating layouts. There’s also an advanced interface, which incorporates the controls for all major cabin functions and can be accessed via a mobile device.

The SsangYong XUV 1 will be in display throughout the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Hyundai has releases the new generation 2012 i20 Blue. The previous i10 model is able to release 99g/km emission gas, and the new 2012 Hyundai i20 Blue can even beat that achievement, with 98g/km emission ability. This car is certainly a great ride for those who are really concerned with green and environment safe issue.

The car is based on the current i20 Comfort and is fitted with a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder CRDi engine under its bonnet, responsible for producing 90 PS and returning a remarkable 76.4 mpg (UK rating / combined cycle).

Following on from the successful i10 Blue launched at the beginning of the year, Hyundai has now added another sub-100g/km CO2 model to its range - the i20 Blue. With emissions of just 98g/km CO2, it is the lowest emitting vehicle in Hyundai UK's product line-up.

The i20 Blue is based on the current i20 Comfort trim level mated to the 1.4 CRDi 90 PS engine and is priced at £13,195 OTR.

To achieve the sub-100g/km CO2 figures, the i20 Blue has the following Blue Drive technologies: Intelligent Stop & Go (ISG), low rolling resistance tyres, rear suspension under cover and rear wheel deflector. With these additional features, the i20 Blue achieves a 12% reduction in CO2 emissions (compared with the current 1.4 CRDi 90PS Style i20 model) from 111g/km down to just 98g/km.

Drivers of the i20 Blue won't need to be making regular visits to a fuel stationeither. 2012 Kia Picanto 3-door

Kia UK has unveiled the new 3-door Picanto model.

The new 1.0- and 1.25-litre Kappa-family petrol engines, which deliver fuel economy of up to 67.3 mpg with CO2 emissions as low as 99 g/km. The larger engine is available with Kia's EcoDynamics fuel-saving technology which includes start-stop technology.

Kia did not simply remove 2 doors and replace them with fixed sheet metal. The main grille opening is larger than that on the five-door and is available with silver or red trim surrounds. The front bumper has been re-profiled to make the car appear wider and lower. There are also new doors, rear panels and glass aft of the A-pillar. The rear bumper has a faux diffuser design as well.

Inside the 3-door Picanto is perhaps not quite bas ‘Sporty’, with the bog standard ’1′ (and 1 ‘Air’ which, you’ll be astonished to learn, is the trim level 1 with AirCon) just getting plain black trim. But move up to the Halo or Equinox (yes, the 30door gets its upper trim levels named instead of the 2 and 3 of the five door) and the Halo has premium black and grey interior trim and the Equinox gets premium ‘Chilli’ red.

The new three-door Picanto will go on sale in the UK from 1st September, and is available with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km meaning that it will qualify for Congestion Charge exemption in London and free VED road tax.

Following on from the recent launch of the all-new Picanto city car Kia is introducing a three-door version to the line-up for the first time since the model appeared in 2004. The distinctively styled three-door version, with a new range of trim levels, will go on sale in the UK from 1st September.

The three-door Picanto has a unique, sporty character while still managing to deliver the same, seemingly contradictory, upgrades as the more family-focused five-door: stronger performance with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the safety and luxury features of a large car without an outrageous price tag, and practicality within a compact package. If the five-door Picanto is ‘the small car, grown up', then the three-door is the same but with a twinkle in its eye.

Why we've created the three-door

City-car sales - referred to as the A-segment in Europe - are increasing all over the world as the costs of buying and owning cars gets more prohibitive and many people are downsizing.

Globally, the market for Picanto-sized cars in 2014 will be around 2.4 million. By 2015 - well within the second-generation Picanto's life cycle - that will have grown to 3.3 million. Around a million of these will be three-door cars. Without a three-door model, Kia would have nothing to offer 30% of buyers in one of the most dynamic sectors of the market.

In the UK, the importance of the three-door car is even more pronounced: the sales split between body styles in the A-segment is a slender 55:45 in favour of five-door models.

Two unique cars from one central concept

The dimensions of the three- and five-door Picanto are identical in order to ensure they enjoy the same levels of interior space and crash safety. However, that simple statement does not do justice to the wealth of detailed work undertaken by Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer and his creative teams to ensure the three-door has its own, unique character.

The changes are most obvious in profile, where new doors, rear panels and glass aft of the A-pillar give the three-door Picanto a fresh, dynamic appearance, accentuated by the rising belt line that slices through the door handle on each side, and the aerodynamically shaped side sill mouldings. Unique alloy wheels on the upper two trim versions are other distinguishing features of the three-door Picanto.

At the front and rear the three-door Picanto reveals its own personality, too. The main grille opening is larger than that on the five-door and is available with silver or red trim surrounds. The front bumper has been re-profiled to make the car appear wider and lower. It contains a slim, full-width lower grille, housing large black-bezelled foglamps with the two upper trim grades.

The rear bumper has a rectangular black central section in place of body colour, a relatively simple measure that makes the three-door Picanto instantly appear sportier. The finishing touch is created by exposed twin chromed exhaust outlets in place of the hidden single tailpipe of the five-door car.

Changes inside

The three-door Picanto is a practical small car with five seats and a big boot within an overall length of less than 3.6 metres, just like the five-door. And while its primary role might not be as a family runabout, Kia has done everything to make access to the back easy for those occasions when owners might want to give a lift to friends or relatives. Sliding and tilting front seats provide a wide ‘walk-in' to the split rear bench.

The three-door Picanto has its own colour schemes and trim structure that reflect its role as the sportier model in the range. The entry-level model - badged Picanto 1 or, with air conditioning, Picanto 1 Air - comes with all-black upholstery. Above that, the models are called Halo and Equinox rather than 2 and 3. Halo has premium black and grey interior trim, while Equinox is finished in premium ‘Chilli' red.

Depending on engine and trim combination, there is a choice of four exterior colours, and alloy wheels are standard on all but ‘1' and ‘1 Air' grade cars.

Efficiency across the range

The three-door Picanto offers brand-new 1.0- and 1.25-litre Kappa-family petrol engines, which deliver fuel economy of up to 67.3mpg with CO2 emissions as low as 99g/km. The larger engine is available with Kia's EcoDynamics fuel-saving technology - an Intelligent Stop & Go engine stop/start system - or, alternatively, with automatic transmission.

The three-cylinder 1.0-litre unit develops 68bhp and 95Nm of torque. The 1.25-litre four-cylinder engine is offered in three guises, all developing 84bhp and 121Nm of torque. In standard form it averages 60.1mpg. With a four-speed automatic transmission fuel consumption is an impressive 53.3mpg. Finally, there is the EcoDynamics version with fuel consumption at 65.7mpg.

The same new running gear developed for the five-door Picanto also appears on the three-door. It features MacPherson struts at the front and a coupled torsion beam axle at the rear, a layout which gives the best combination of ride and handling while minimising intrusions into passenger and luggage space.

The new set-up ensures the Picanto is stable in a straight linear speed and supple over typical British bumps. A stiff rear axle aids agility while also contributing to the car's impressive stability and comfort.

Four trim grades

Whilst the five-door Picanto follows Kia's simple trim naming structure of ‘1' for the entry model, ‘2' for the mid-spec and ‘3' for the top-of-the-range version a different approach has been taken with the three door.

Picanto three-door is offered in four trim specifications: 1, 1 Air, Halo and Equinox. The 1 and 1 Air carry over from the five-door and offer buyers a great value specification whilst the Halo and Equinox are new to the range.

Halo and Equinox are similar in concept to the popular ‘Originals Collection' versions of the Kia Soul, such as the Soul Echo, Burner and Searcher, and each offer a very high level of specification. By offering both entry level and characterful, more luxurious specifications Picanto three-door appeals to a broad customer audience within the growing A-segment.

Standard features on all versions include a trip computer, height-adjustable seat, a tilt-adjustable steering column and Motor Driven Power Steering. In-car entertainment is provided by a RDS radio and CD player with MP3 compatibility. Picanto 1, 1 Air, and Halo have four speakers and Picanto Equinox has six. Picanto Halo and Picanto Equinox also have USB and AUX ports, an iPod cable and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. On the outside body-coloured mirrors and bumpers and twin chromed exhaust outlets are all standard.

The Picanto 1 Air is for those customers who want air conditioning, and the fantastic value of the 1 specification, but without upgrading to the even more highly specified Halo or Equinox versions.

Whilst the Halo and Equinox versions have differing equipment levels they share certain items such as Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, automatic lights, LED front daytime running lights and LED rear lights, body-coloured side sill mouldings and a red front grille surround.

The Halo version adds to this with unique 14" alloys, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, reverse parking sensors, alloy pedals and a Supervision Cluster - Kia's comprehensive electronic instrument binnacle. Inside the black and grey upholstery is complemented with a high gloss white centre fascia and steering wheel arm, on the outside the Halo is finished in Lunar Glow metallic paint.

The Equinox spec changes the interior to premium red ‘Chilli' upholstery with a contrasting high gloss black fascia and gearknob. Distinctive 15" telephone-dial style alloy wheels lend a more sporting look to the exterior which is finished in Galaxy Black metallic paint. Automatic air conditioning and a smart key with a start/stop button are on top of the shared level of specification.

All versions have electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) to apportion stopping effort to the wheels with most traction, and emergency brake assist system (BAS), ensuring maximum stopping power regardless of the pressure applied to the pedal by the driver.

Should the worst happen every Picanto has front, side and curtain airbags to cushion heads and torsos against impacts from any angle. Front seat-belt pre-tensioners and load limiters brace occupants against a crash impact while reducing the risk of chest injury.

Picanto, in line with every other Kia, comes with the best warranty in the business - seven years or 100,000 miles on all non-wear and tear parts, including labour, subject to terms and conditions. The warranty is fully transferable to the next owner if the car is sold before the time or mileage limit expires.

Porsche unveils 2012 MY 911 GT3 Cup Racer
The Frankfurt Motor Show, which is scheduled to take place next month, is hosting the debut of the all-new Porsche 911, also code-named 991.

It is based on the 991 (997) GT3 RS, with the 3.8-liter flat-six engine producing an identical 450HP at 8,500 rpm.
The new GT3 Cup has a larger 100-liter FT3 safety fuel tank, which is filled via an opening in the hood. According to Porsche, this change makes the car more suitable for a wider range of endurance racing.

The Porsche racer rides on 18-inch wheels shod in 25/64-18 front and 30/68-18 Michelin racing tires.

In addition, the Porsche Mobil1 Supercar racers, which support the F1 championship, get exclusive use of the PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes that, compared to the composite cast units used in other race versions of the 911, reduce overall weight by 20 kg.

The car will be available for the 2012 and 2013 seasons with a pricing that starts from EUR161,750, without the local taxes.

2012 Hyundai i30 First Picture

Hyundai will show its new i30 family hatch at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show next month.

The new model, inspired by the new i40 (actually that hexagonal shaped front grille and headlights are the new face of all Hyundais), looks very nice compare with the previous one.

Along the profile and toward the rear, the new small hatch features the now-familiar and heavily creased character lines of the newer Hyundai line-up, shared with the Elantra, Accent, i20 and i45.

The next-generation i30 was designed and developed at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and Hyundai always goes to great lengths to emphasize the German/European DNA of its models. The model will compete in the largest segment in Europe - the C-segment dominated by the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, Opel Astra and Ford Focus for generations.

High Wycombe, 10 August 2011 - Hyundai has released the first rendering of the next-generation i30, revealing an exciting new look for the company's bestselling C-segment hatchback. It will be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) in September.

The all-new i30 was designed and engineered at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and represents the next evolution of the unique form language, ‘fluidic sculpture' - the company's distinctive design DNA.

The ‘fluidic sculpture' ethos utilises flowing lines inspired by nature and modern architecture to give a constant three-dimensional presence to Hyundai vehicles, and was introduced as the Hyundai ix-onic concept at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Since this debut, ‘fluidic sculpture' has become the design language behind all new Hyundai models launched in Europe.

Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer, Hyundai Motor Europe commented: "When designing the new i30, we used strong, fluid lines to sculpt a car which looks athletic while exuding a sense of constant motion, even when stationary. The next-generation i30 is also recognisable thanks to Hyundai's signature front face - the hexagonal shaped front grille.

Ford has unveiled the 2012 Harley-Davidson F-150 special edition.

The 2012 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 is the latest in a line of joint Ford-Harley-Davidson F-Series trucks dating back to 1999. Ford and Harley-Davidson’s latest effort comes standard with Ford’s 6.2-liter 411-hp V-8, producing 434 lb-ft of torque.

On the outside, new design enhancements include unique bodyside graphics, 22-inch machined-aluminum wheels and a new exterior color choice – White Platinum Tri-Coat. The truck also features a bold front fascia and six-bar billet-style bright chrome grill.

Interior trim panels are covered in high-gloss Tuxedo Black paint, while the console lid and upper steering wheel carry the snakeskin leather. The scuff plate features brushed aluminum with snakeskin texture. All interior chrome surfaces feature a satin finish. Design in the details
The exterior of the 2012 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 offers a bold front fascia and six-bar billet-style bright chrome grille, and it boasts "Harley-Davidson" bright chrome badging. The truck also has a lowered appearance with a standard, fully integrated deployable running board.

Also standard are new 22-inch machined-aluminum wheels with painted accents and Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo on center cap. The paint selection is classic Harley-Davidson - Tuxedo Black and White Platinum Tri-Coat; this is the first year white has been offered.

New graphics on the bodyside of the truck are executed in a unique snakeskin texture, while "Harley-Davidson" dimensional lettering is featured on the box side. The snakeskin is inspired by tank inserts on premium-level Harley-Davidson motorcycles and also comes into play on the interior.

FPV has unveiled availability of a limited-edition new offering in its new supercharged V8 line-up: the 2011 GT Black at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne.

Dubbed as the FPV GT Black, the car comes with a unique matt black stripe package, black upper and lower grilles, black fog lamp bezels, a bi-modal quad exhaust system finished with black exhaust tips and a set of 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels.

FPV’s one-off concept car is powered by the supercharged Boss 5.0-litre V8 engine.

Inside, the FPV GT Black sports shadow leather upholstery, piano black surface finishes and a reverse parking camera.

Production will be limited to 125 units and pricing starts at $74,290 AUD ($76,840 USD / €54,185).

FPV ANNOUNCES GT BLACK LIMITED EDITION SERIES

FPV has today announced the launch of its most limited edition vehicle to date, the GT BLACK.

Responding to the overwhelming feedback received on the FPV Concept, revealed at this year's Australian International Motor Show, FPV have taken the popular black-on-black treatment and applied the stealth-looking paintwork to just 125 units of the current standard supercharged Boss 335kW GT, creating the FPV GT BLACK.

"We were totally blown away by the positive feedback received from fans and show-goers on our Concept," FPV General Manager Rod Barrett said.

The limited edition GT BLACK is powered by the much vaunted all-aluminium BOSS 335 5.0-litre supercharged engine with a maximum power output of 335kW at 5750rpm, combined with maximum torque of 570Nm delivered across a broad 2200-5500 rpm range.

The newest addition to the FPV stable will be finished in menacing Silhouette black paintwork and will carry the excellent features of the current GT range plus some exciting extras, including reverse camera and leather seating.

An all-new styling matt black stripe decal will feature on the bonnet, rear wing and bodysides, with the black paint treatment also carrying over on to the front and rear bumpers and upper and lower grilles.

2012 Buick GS and Buick eAssist Priced

Buick has released pricing for the 2012 Regal with eAssist, and the sportier 2012 Regal GS.

The 2012 Buick Regal with eAssist will start at $28,670 and the performance-oriented Regal GS will start at $34,270 when the models go on sale later this year. Both prices exclude an $860 destination charge.

The 2012 Regal GS will be the top model in the sedan's range, with pricing starting at $35,310 (also including the $860 destination charge). For the GS, Buick has boosted the output of its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, producing 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque in this application. The Regal GS will launch exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, though a six-speed automatic unit will be available later in the model year.

The eAssist system is a $2,000 option on the Regal base model and uses a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Ecotec engine together with a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator that allows for regenerative braking. It gets an EPA-rated 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. the 2012 Regal eAssist will be priced from $29,530, including $860 in destination charges.

Both models will come standard with Buick’s IntelliLink system, which is similar to Chevrolet’s MyLink, later this year. The system comes with a 7-inch, high-resolution touch-screen, Bluetooth connectivity and USB input.

2012 Buick Regal eAssist and GS Pricing Announced

Arrival of fuel-efficient eAssist and performance-oriented GS broaden Regal's reach

DETROIT – Buick's Regal offerings will double this fall, with the arrival of the new technologically advanced 2012 Regal with eAssist and the performance-oriented 2012 Regal GS, which are expected to broaden the appeal of the hot-selling midsize luxury sport sedan.

Regal with eAssist will start at $29,530, and Regal GS will start at $35,310; both prices include $860 in destination charges. The eAssist system is a $2,000 option on the Regal base model, mated to a 2.4L Ecotec engine. Buick will continue to offer the base model without eAssist as well as the 2.0L turbo.

"Regal with eAssist and Regal GS offer distinct advantages to midsize luxury sport sedan customers," said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. "The eAssist's advanced technology delivers the most fuel-efficient option, while the high-output GS is the sportiest expression of Regal to date."

Regal with eAssist uses a variety of advanced technologies and body enhancements to deliver an EPA-rated 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, the latter being unsurpassed by the higher-priced Lexus HS Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. With gas prices near $4 a gallon, the option on Regal should pay for itself in about 3 ½ years.

The fuel economy boost that Regal with eAssist offers comes from pairing the direct-injected 2.4L four-cylinder Ecotec engine with a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery system and electric motor-generator that enables regenerative braking capability. This "light electrification" system also is available on the 2012 Buick LaCrosse.

Standard features with the eAssist system include driver-selectable, fuel economy-optimizing mode for the air conditioning system, enabling more frequent and longer-duration engine stop periods; ECO gauge on the instrument panel that continuously responds to driving behavior, enabling the driver to drive with greater efficiency; and powerflow readout in the color infotainment or driver information center that shows the flow of energy through the electric assist system, such as battery charging from regeneration and electric power directed to the engine.

Regal GS has been SAE-certified to deliver 270 horsepower (201kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400Nm). Its exclusive Ecotec 2.0L direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers more torque than Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5. Torque is the twisting force that gets a vehicle moving and what the driver feels when accelerating.

The GS's engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission, and gets an estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission will be available later in the model year. The GS powertrain is covered by a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Regal GS also features push-button start; a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom sport steering wheel with audio controls; metal sport pedals; and leather-appointed, heated and 12-way adjustable sport seating. A Harman Kardon premium 336-watt, 5.1 Matrix Surround Sound system with nine speakers is also standard.

Regal GS is also equipped with an Interactive Drive Control System, which adapts damping and other driving functions that allows the driver to choose a standard adaptive setting, a Sport mode, and a GS mode, which is tuned for those who enjoy a higher level of ride and handling performance.

Other standard features on Regal GS include front and rear ultrasonic parking assist, a 120-volt accessory power outlet, Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, and 19-inch alloy wheels; 20-inch polished alloys with summer-only performance tires are available.

Later in the year, Regal GS and Regal with eAssist both will come with standard Buick IntelliLink, which uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a new 7-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. IntelliLink expands on Buick's current Bluetooth and USB capabilities to allow smartphone control via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls. It also enables streaming stereo audio from the phone through services like PANDORA® Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®.

Most important, Buick IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices with each vehicle's infotainment system, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The Final Editions consist of an Elise SC, the Exige and the Exige S260. Only 15 Final Edition SCs will be sold, with 25 Exige Matte Black models and 30 Exige S260 Final Editions.

Frankfurt previewed: 2012 Mazda CX-5

Mazda has introduced the new CX-5 compact SUV ahead of its Frankfurt show debut.

The 2012 Mazda CX-5 is also the first model to kick off the brand’s new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, which was previewed with the Mazda Shinari and Mazda Mingai concept cars.

The Mazda has confirmed the diesel version will use about 4.5 litres of fuel per 100km; the company is drip feeding details and information, instead only confirming that the carbon dioxide emissions for the 2.2-litre diesel will be less than 120 grams per kilometre.

Mazda still hasn't revealed any detailed specs, however, the automaker did confirm that both the gasoline and diesel engines will be available in two separate versions: a standard version and a high-power version.

Other SkyActiv technologies are also applied to the chassis, which is made on Mazda’s new modular platform. The platform is said to be highly versatile and interchangeable, and could be used on anything from the Mazda3 to the CX-7. It will offer high rigidity while maintaining a relatively lightweight nature.

The CX-5 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September along with the the upgraded Mazda3, which has now lower CO2 emissions and better quality.

Lexus released the first teaser image for the new generation Lexus GS, the 2013 GS 350 to be exact.

Being been completely redesigned (inside and out), the fourth-generation GS will feature the brand’s new design philosophy, with styling cues such as a distinctive new front grille, that will soon be seen on all future Lexus vehicles.

Engine specifications haven't been released, but choices are slated to include a 3.5-liter V6, a hybridized 3.5-liter V6 and possibly a four-cylinder diesel for Europe.

Beside this, the new GS will also lead the rest of the Lexus lineup in an entirely new direction of driving dynamics.

The German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has announced the unveiling of its Viano Vision Pearl van concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The main highlights of this car are spaciousness and exclusive interior design, and apart from its high-grade interior which features a maritime theme, the Viano Vision Pearl is also characterised by an unique exterior appearance due to its redesigned front-end and special body finish.

On the outside, the Viano Vision Pearl gets Mercedes' new "Magno Pearl Grey" satin paint option, along with a sportier front bumper and large 19-inch alloy wheels - the same design shown on leaked A-Class images earlier this year.

The interior of the Viano Vision Pearl is slathered in leather and wood trims while also boasting an array of features such as the high-end audio system with an output of 1320 watts and 18 integrated, specially hand-built loudspeakers.

The van is designed to haul six passengers comfortably. It features a pebble grey exterior paint finish known as ‘mango pearl grey’. This is the first instance of the usage of this paint by the automaker in the van sector. The front end is integrated with LED daytime running lamps.

Anderson Germany has released a new program for the Maserati GranTurismo S, named the Superior Black Edition.

Other features of the new Superior Black Edition package include a stainless-steel exhaust system for a special engine sound along a high performance suspension able to lower the ground clearance of the model. On the other hand, the styling tweaks are more visible and they manage to bring a fresh air along with a more aggressive look.

Ford releases official fuel economy numbers for the 2012 Ford Explorer EcoBoost.

The Ford Explorer’s 2011 redesign has already netted it class-competitive fuel economy, with 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. But the next chapter in Ford’s attempts to offer its fleet with turbocharged EcoBoost engines starts with a zinger: the Explorer’s new EcoBoost four-cylinder engine will deliver even better numbers: 20/28 mpg (city/highway).

The turbo will produce 240 horsepower and 270 pounds-feet of torque. The horsepower is down from the V-6’s 290 hp, but the torque is up from 255 pounds-feet.

Pricing information hasn't been released, but the model should start arriving at dealerships shortly.

Now launching in the Explorer, this advanced EcoBoost four-cylinder engine provides the optimum balance between fuel efficiency and responsive power, delivering 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and a generous 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm.

Ford's new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine combines gasoline direct injection and turbocharging with smaller overall displacement, delivering comparable power to a standard V6 engine while delivering the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder engine. Ford holds more than 125 patents on its EcoBoost engine technology.

EcoBoost is a global Ford strategy to provide affordable fuel efficiency for millions of drivers while also delivering the power they desire. EcoBoost will be offered on 90 percent of Ford nameplates by 2013.

The combination of superior fuel efficiency and ample responsiveness is enabled by direct gasoline injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). Efficiency is further enhanced through employment of low-friction 5W-GF5 motor oil, a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor, electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) and a unique 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission developed to reduce friction and increase efficiency.

The Explorer with its standard V6 delivers up to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway to lead the full-size V6 SUV segment in fuel efficiency. The Explorer with EcoBoost continues this class-leading fuel efficiency momentum.

Explorer fuel efficiency also benefits from a smooth vehicle shape and careful aerodynamic detailing like optimization of the front air dam and rear liftgate spoiler lip, as well as lightweight components such as an aluminum hood.

In the first six months of 2011, Explorer sales totaled 65,823 vehicles. This figure exceeds the full-year 2010 total of 60,687 Explorers. More than half of early buyers of the redesigned 2011 Explorer cited fuel efficiency as a primary motivation in their purchase decision. Moreover, the majority of customers are choosing better-equipped XLT and Limited series models.

The 2012 Explorer is assembled at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant.
